Pool 10 Mississippi River Bass

by Glenn Walker on 08/25/2009

A healthy pool 10 bass
Well after three weeks away from the river fishing deep water in Minnesota, I was glad to head back down to the cabin and be able to do some shallow water power fishing! I got down to Prairie Du Chien on Wednesday night to start pre-fishing for the Grant County 4-Man bass tournament.

Thursday we spent the morning checking both main river and backwater areas. Despite the heavy rains on Wednesday, we found the clarity to be alright and the fish willing to bite. Covering a lot of water was the key, because when you found one biting, there were more biting too!

A wide variety of baits worked, such as Chug Bugs, RC Tackle Swim jigs and tubes on Eagle Claw HP Tube Hooks.

Snag Proof Frog bass
With Friday being a very rainy and cold day, we only fished for a few hours. So Saturday we again hit the water to figure out our plan for the tournament. Fishing backwater areas with Snag Proof frogs, buzzbaits and swim jigs was what worked best for us.

Tournament day came and so did the fog. We waited for two hours to take off and once we did, we realized the bite was rather slow. Our starting spot's had a boat on them and the other the current had picked up and changed things significantly.

But we stay focused and made our way to the backwaters to fish RC Tackle swim jigs and Snag Proof Frogs for the rest of the day. Our team put together a 12-fish limit for 26 some lb's and put us in third place!

I look to be spending some more quality time down on the river Labor Day weekend!

Nice job Glenn and nice meeting you also. I was pleased with our finish but it was a day of missed opportunities thats for sure. I guess that happens when you frog fish all day. Dan
