Help - hazards on Lk Wissota/Yellow Rvr/Chippewa R

#817431 - 09/07/09 12:47 AM

Looking for some help with Lake Wissota. I am headed to the FLW League Championship and I am looking for some safe boating information.

I would like to see if I could get some information from anyone familiar with the Lake Wissota system with respect to known hazards, deadheads, sandbars that are unmarked? Does anyone have information on areas considered no-wake? I have reviewed several maps - WI DNR/HotSpots and do have some information. But, as we all know, map information is not exactly the most accurate information.

I am asking for this information to protect my equipment which I use to make a living with. I have too much money wrapped in my boat/motor/etc to neglect hazard considerations and want to preserve the money I have by knowing the navigational rules for this body of water before I arrive.(no tickets please from the warden or sheriff) Any help with my request is greatly appreciated! I am looking forward to my visit to the backyard GEM - Lake Wissota. Thank you....Captain Paul

Beach area up the yellow is no wake, but you will see that it is clearly marked.

My suggestion is that you take your corners very wide. When you are going into the yellow river from the main lake the gps contours say it is 10 feet, but it is more like 1.5-2 feet quite far out from the lake shore. I also had someone from one of the marina claim to have replaced several lower units as a result of the area on the other side of the lake where it goes into the Chippewa river. I learned about the yellow river bar the hard way and have taken their word for it on the Chippewa River side.

There is a no-wake area near the channel to the little lake and in the channel around an island on the east side of the lake. Other than the one mentioned in the yellow river, that's all I can think of. All clearly marked.

Larson's Point. Beware of Larson's Point...Don't get too close, some of us found that out the hard way some years ago But you are walleye fishing so you probably won't get that close. Also if you go up into the Chippewa, do watch out for floating debris such as logs.

All - thank you again for all your help. I had a great time in Chippewa Falls and very much enjoyed my time on the water on Lake Wissota. I am happy to say - no damage to the boat with the exception of a couple of dings on the prop from all places near Larson Point. Fortunately, I was on the electric motor and not moving too fast. Again, thank you. You have a very beautiful place to fish. I just wish Navonics and Lake Master would do a better job of mapping the lake! Take care...Capt. Paul
