Night over day- cat fishing

#819986 - 09/17/09 10:13 PM

Brad's post is the inspiration of this poll.

IF fishing were equal between night and day and you're work schedule was flexible enough, when would you prefer to go catten?
I like catten
You may choose only one
During the day.
During the night.
No preferance.

I am not big on the all night trips, but I like the 6-midnight shift. So I selected no preference.

i prefer the night trips, i have the river basically to myself (except when BK is creeping around ) don't have to worry about the cruisers, and nobody sees where you're fishing.

plus, it takes a lot more to run the river at night, which really cuts down on the competition, due to too many people being uncomfortable navigating the river after dark.

During the day and into the night. Is that an option?

I am one of those that would LOVE to fish at night... BUT I am not really comfortable out there.. The river is such a beautiful place during the day.. but it REALLY creeps me out at night. Thank God the night we went out with BK it was almost a full moon. But last weekend when the FM and I were out there was absolutely NO moon, it was a rough long almost fishless night.

If I were to go out on my own I prefer daylight, but the bigguns seem to be caught at night so I'd go out then with a guide.

The question was worded strangely....there were so many caveats that it's unrealistic. I think several people here forgot about the big one -- that daytime and night time had equally good fishing in the hypothetical situation posed to us.

Assuming EQUALLY GOOD fishing, and no backlash at work, I'd definitely rather go during the day. Easier to see, warmer weather, fewer bugs, kids can come with cause they aren't sleeping, don't have to become sleep deprived if I fish 5 days in a row, less chance of a breakin at the boat ramp while you're on the water, etc. If I could catch the same number of fish with all of those benefits, that would be GREAT.

Wait a minute, I get skunked every time I go out anyway. I guess I CAN catch the same number during the day.

Well, I have different preferences during the spring and fall.

I responded to the poll based on the time of year I fish most, but my favorite time of day are twighlight hours. Morning or night. I totally agree with the last post that the extra light is very helpful when you're trying to place a bait tight to cover.

Even when there's a night bite on during mid-summer, there generally action at dusk, and in the spring and fall dawn/dusk can be good times along with mid-day (depending on the depth of your spots due to light penetration). I haven't taken the biggest fish during mid-day, but when there's good submerged cover in deep water I know others that have done well...

Did you expect anything less?

For a guy that was afraid of the dark when I was a kid, I've come to really enjoy the river at night. First trip to an area, scouting new spot will always be a daytime job.

Less traffic, what I believe to be a better bite AND I can use a palomar knot without anyone seeing me! Tag, your it Stuart!

A better bite? The original question says to assume the bite is equally good during the day and night.

I also forgot to mention one more reason that I like daytime fishing -- I said "you can see better"...well, I meant that with respect to walking, casting, driving, videos, pictures, etc....

But the best "increased visibility" factor of all would be that I wouldn't be so inclined to use WHITE rods if I fished exclusively during the day. In fact, I might actually go with black for a starker contrast with all of that white light

Plus in the daylight I might actually be able to tie some of the more complex knots like the uni...

I am with Aanderud. I don't necessarily hate night fishing, but I definitely like fishing in the light. There are certain things about the night that I do like, but day fishing far outweighs them. Night fishing can be more peaceful, but it can also be nerve wracking.

I guess the important thing is just getting out and fishing.

Although aanderud is certainly pulling me toward daytime!

It's 10 pm, time to soak a sucker and think about this!

I like to operate at night. I especially hate the use of any and all lights whatsoever. Darkness promotes "stealthness."

I've ended up the year with my perfered method as leaving in the light and coming back in the black.

It has to do with a couple things.

Percentages. There are more cats swimming around just after dark than at any other time of the day. My chances are better to just run into one at night.

Traffic. Much less boat traffic after the sun goes down. That's good for fishing and safety.

Scouting during the daylight is a must. In the spring, I'll make a couple trips just to check out the area before I think about fishing in the darkness. Some times I'll take a rod or two along, other times not.

This time of year a place like Lock and Dam #3 might have 100 boats fishing around it during the day but at night you'll find yourself all alone to move as freely as you like.

For the pole, I would always rather fish during the day. I can see to tie knots, work out "professional overruns", keep from running into stumps and wing dams and all those other things.

What I actually do is fish when the fish bite if it makes a difference and a lot of times it does. I'm not sure if I have ever caught a big fish in the Minnesota River during daylight hours. I have caught many big fish after the sun went down. That makes it a no brainer. I have never caught a walleye in the dark on LOTW. I have caught several trophy sturgeon.

BK is absolutely right, during the night hours, boat traffic is less than 10% of what is during daylight. You can have any fishing spot you want (unless your camped on one of BK's holes) , no one knows what you are using for bait or casting and many other advantages. Good old GPS has helped night fishing no end. You can easily avoid those stumps and wing dams. And yes, I would like to trash all lights except the one I have to use to land fish or tie knots. You can see so much better on the river without any lights at all.

Kind of makes you wonder if big fish prowl at night for similar reasons such as less competition (traffic) and the prey I assume is easier to catch. They probably 'learn' over time that feeding at night has big advantages.

Re: Night over day- cat fishing

Seems like all the bait fish come out as darkness falls..."comes out". Now that's funny! The bait fish are around all the time, just come to the surface and shallows at dark. I would guess since they are in the shallows they would be easier to catch by a relatively slow flathead.

I've seen flats with their back out of the water feeding at night, never during the day.

I have to keep reminding myself that cats don't have very good eye sight compared to their other senses. Not much light in the muddy depths either.

Shawn nailed this one. It depends on the time of year. Spring time is daytime. After that you can fish during the day and do OK but the big girls use their advantages in scent and stealth to sneak up on things at night. It is much harder for a 25 lb channel cat to sneak up on anything during the day. I also discovered some daytime patterns that produce well. You just have to know where they are during the day and hit them in the face with something good. Make them an offer they couldn't refuse.

Plenty of daytime cats caught in this neck of the woods, including my boat's largest flathead to date....caught in 4 feet of water in the middle of a sun-soaked mid-June day.

I know whiskerkev will poo-poo these kitties, but they sure pulled hard for my guests and put plenty of slimes in anglers' faces!

Those are some fine kitties Jason. Why would I poo poo those? Its not like you have an armored glove or something... I credit a walleye guy for taking pictures of those beatiful specimens. You should try to mix in a trip down here if your schedule permits. River cats and lake cats are the same species but they have a different work out schedule. Both of those cats you are holding look about 30 inches and maybe 10lbs. a 30 incher here goes maybe 15-20 lbs. I have a good example at home. I'll throw up later. These are both post spawn 30 inchers. Can you picture full of eggs..

So to not confuse the listening and not talking audience, I 'spose we should say if we're talking flats, channels, lakes or rivers.

Many, many flats are caught during the day, but the radio tracking will show the most movement (feeding) is just after dark for flatheads.

Talking channels on the river, there isn't a need to go out at night, unless a person wants to get away from the recreational boater, schedule or just likes the darkness.
