I think this would close the debate on anyone questioning why they close the smallmouth season in minnesota. These pics are taken on a favorite lake of mine that is not vary well known. We caught these fish on topwater poppers and had a blast doing it. Almost every fish that is pictured is over #4 pounds with the exception of the one my daughter caught. My son got his new PB which weighed in at 5 pounds 2 ounces and measured 22 inches in length. My wife also got her PB that same night which went a tad over 4.5 pounds. All of these fish were just as round as they were long and have been gorging themselves on the small bait fish in the lake. We know this because we took time to just sit back and watch. These smallies would herd the small baitfish into a shallow area of less than a foot deep and then all at once you would see them start charging through the school and then you would see a frenzy. All you had to do was throw you popper into the center of these little blowups and bang it would be fish on and hang on!!!

Great looking fish! They sure are fun this time of year. What a great way to get the whole family out fishing
