After pre-fishing and fishing the tourney I found the bite to be fair-good but not quite the full fall swing. Water temps were hovering around 72 degrees on saturday which with this cool weather this week is sure to drop only for the better. I may not have won the tourney but I caught alot of fish. As I reported before the Croix is full of walleye and sauger willing to bite but are just shy of that 15" mark. I did hook into a 4.5lb'er and a 6lber pre-fishing and also hooked into some HEAVY fish tourney day but struggled to get them to the boat . The bite has been best for me in 20-30FOW of water pulling cranks along steep break lines from 2mph-2.5mph . Best colors were blue lightening (I think it's called) Flicker shad, natural perch #5 jointed, firetiger #5 jointed, Blue and chrome (Fleet Farm exclusive), natural shad #5 (black and silver) and black gold sunset Flicker shad. Flicker shads were #7's. Everyday seemed to have a different color that worked the best out of these but all produced fish.
Well it seems as though fall is on it's way, but unfortunately for me that was the high light of my few hours on the water yesterday. I usually spend most of my time closer to Prescott, but decided to target between Stillwater and Hudson. We marked the most fish off sand/rock points with the majority of fish holding towards the tips in the deeper water. Getting those fish to commit was the hard part. Tried rigging minnows and 3 waying multiple cranks without much to show for our efforts. Surface water temps ranged between 62/64F. The major cold front which was still blowing quite hard probably had a lot to do with the lack of cooperation. Looking forward to hopefully a long fall.
