10/8 - 10/10 well 10/9 anyway

#825950 - 10/12/09 10:08 AM

Hit the lake for our annual fall Mille Lacs trip on Thursday afternoon. After unpacking at the Red Door and enjoying a beer with the boys, whom I hadn't seen for way too long, we were getting the boat ready to go.

After talking to a few people, we decided to hit the rocks first and focus on the weeds later in the night. We had ended up with 10 fish for the night, all caught on different crankbaits and different colors. No pattern what so ever. The water temp that night was 53 when we hit the lake, at 6:30AM when we loaded the boat I wasn't paying attention to the temp.

I really enjoyed a nice sunny Friday afternoon with a light breeze and cold beers. Sitting at the Door, watching the leaves cover the ground thinking that "tonight" will be a better night. Unfortunately, mother nature had other ideas. About midnight, it started snow pretty good and the wind had kicked up out of the north with a bit of vengeance. At this point, we had 3 fish in the boat. Again, no pattern. Like the first night, we did have a few of the "light" bites. The fish just aren't aggressive right now. At 2AM, we decided to call it a night with about 2 inches of fresh snow in the boat. We joked how we could take this off our bucket list.

Saturday was one of those "late" fall days where mother nature reminds us this is her game, she just lets us play occasionally. It was pretty miserable and by the time 7PM rolled around we had talked ourselves out of fishing. Another boat in our group did venture to the west side of the lake that was quite calm. The report Sunday morning was no fish, covered lots of good water.

Summary, speeds were 1.5 - 2.0. No one color caught multiple fish. No one bait style did better than another. Rocks produced 95% of our fish. Best fish was 26 inches. Majority of the fish were under 22"

All in all, it was a very slow year for our group. However, it was great getting together again. For those venturing up to the lake from here to ice up, good luck. I may be able to squeeze in a night or two if we aren't staring down a hole sooner than planned.

Pics are off my cell, sorry for the quality. When I get home tonight I'll download the camera pics.

I also want to put out a big shout to Snosuit!! I got to give my new gear it's first true test. It was as advertised. Not once my body get cold and only once did I put on gloves. It's amazing how warm your hands will be if your core is warm(I thought this might be great marketing BS), IT'S NOT.

Thanks James for hooking up a brother.

Last time we stayed in cabin 13 it snowed like heck but the big fish bit well that night.

hard core right there...i love it. I tell people that don't fish much some of these stories and they look at me like I've just smoked a big fat joint or something.
the thrill of the hunt makes it all worth it.
