Ice fishing Bibs

#826707 - 10/14/09 03:23 PM

I'm in the market for some new ice fishing Bibs. I'd like to hear all the pro's and con's on the 3 most common ones ( Snosuit, Ice Armor, and vexilar cold snap ) as well as any other ones out there. Doing some research today I found out that Snosuit was bought by Frabill ( I'm sure someone here has already posted that ) I've heard nothing but good Info. about the snosuit but have a hard time with the cost ( $249.00 ) for the Bibs. I can get a full set of the other 2 brands for that cost or less. Thanks in advance for all of you thoughts and input.

I hardly ever buy anything insulated. Layering has always worked for me. So the Cabelas gore-tex Guidewear bibs that I wear during a summer downpour are the same bibs I wear during ice season. Long underwear, jeans then bibs is usually sufficent to stay warm and dry in cold conditions. Multifunctional, tough, and can be used throughout the year under any condition and temperature range. Reinforced knees are nice when kneeling on ice. They are over 10 years old now and still going strong!!

Mike

edit - watch for clearance sales on the Cabelas website... you can often get them on sale or half off, depending on the models.

Luke. Thanks for the Info. That is a great deal.

I really don't want a full suit. I wish they had a deal on just the bibs. They do have some great deals on the Artic Armor as well. Thorne's told me that Snosuit are no longer making the full suits. If anyone is looking for a full suit and wants a great deal I'd hurry and order you one.

Snosuit is the way to go. No need for a fish house then. You will stay much more mobile and catch more fish than hunkering down in a fish house. Maybe you could by the coat and bib set and if you dont want the set sell the coat. Im sure there are plenty of people that would be happy with it.

A con about the Snosuit? You will get lonely on the ice because all of your buddies will be hiding in there portables waiting for the fish to come to them. .

I've had snosuit bibs for 3 years and absolutely love them. They are a very good investment in my book. I also use them for early and late walleye fishing. They are super versatile and you have great mobility in them. Dan

crosslakesales.com sells a lot of refurbished stuff so you need to be careful when dealing with them. I got an aqua vu that had to go back for warranty repair the day I got it. Luckily it had a 90 day refurbished model warranty. They certainly don't publish the fact that they sell refurbished goods.

Another vote for the Snosuit. I find myself in just the bibs a lot. I'm a hoodie kind of guy and only put the coat on when the winds blowing or when it's really cold.

I think crosslake does advertise fairly, if it is a refurb, the have refurb listed on the picture, as far as the snosuit, it is listed as new with tags, where as the aqua views are listed with refurb across the picture-

Fish- I believe you can just order the bibs!

I have been using the Vexilar Cold Snap gear and have been very happy with that. Lots of pockets to carry gear in and keeps you warm/dry too. You can buy either the set or just the bibs if you like.

My Gamehides are fantastic for Spring and Fall. But after watching numerous buddies get Snosuits and rave about them...I bit the bullet. You cannot go wrong with this suit! Cold absolutely positively cannot penetrate this suit. There are times when you really wish you had one if you didn't.

I have been happy with my strikemaster bibs. You could also wait for the ice fishing show to buy a set of bibs and compare them all in one day. You will most likely find a good deal on a set of ice fishing bibs there.

Being the "champ" has nothing to do with size or never coming out on the loosing end of a scuffle. Being the "champ" means you take all comers, win, lose or draw. And nobody can take that away from ya' Kooty. Even if Marshall broke you into bite sized pieces.

I bought a pair of Carhartt Extremes a couple of years ago.

They are the warmest bibs I've ever worn. They are almost

too warm when hole hopping when the temp is above 32.

I paid under 100.00 for mine which makes it hard to pay

2 1/2 times that for some other bibs.

Here is some info on the Extremes;

"Our Men’s Extremes® zip-to-waist biberall is water-repellent and designed for the coldest conditions. Made of 1000-denier Cordura® nylon, it’s lined in arctic-weight 100% quilted nylon polyester. It features a zipper front and leg zippers that zip to the hip and are covered with snap close wind flaps. It also has double knees with cleanout bottoms to accommodate knee pads and zippered hand pockets."

I have a pair of Guidewear uninsulated bibs for warmer

weather ice fishing. I wear a Guidewear insulated parka

over both the Carhartt's and the Guidewear bibs.

Go to a sporting goods store that sells ski equipment and get a good pair of ski pants. They are insulated with plenty of pockets and have elastic on the inside liner that cover your boots and keep the snow out. I got mine for around $50 at Joe's Sporting goods. They were 50% off and work great. I dont like bibs as I feel they limit my movement and when trudging through snow My pants inevitably get wet anyway. Ski pant will typically have zip down vents on the inside of each leg for those warmer days and when walking. Plus at less than half the cost for the same performance, how can you go wrong

I fish on my knees whenever I'm not in my trap. I use to wear carharts but my knees where always wet and they would hurt too because of no padding. Carhartts do work great when in a shelter though.

I think this time of year you're going to run into full retail pricing just about everywhere you go. You might give Dean at Everts Resort a call and see if he has only hold over stock from last season or some other option that might allow you to save a few bucks. The other place to call would be Thorne Bros up in the north metro. I would bet they sold more Snosuits than just about anyone last year.
