Mercury Voltage Regulators

#827429 - 10/17/09 01:20 PM

Last sunday my voltage regulator failed on my 2003 125 ELPTO and started a fire. I was at full throttle when something shorted out. Luckily I was able to put the fire out before any gas started on fire. I was wondering if anyone else has been having troubles with the voltage regulators and what you may have done about it. I am also posting this as a warning to keep any eye on your voltmeter and tachometer. The voltmeter was running on the low side and my tach was acting up right before this happened.

I am ordering parts online now to fix all the melted wires and am a little afraid of this happening again with a worse outcome. Are there any aftermarket regulators that may not be as likely to fail?

I had the exact same thing happen to me on the same 2+2 Mercury motor only mine was a 100 HP. Voltage regulator shorted out and started a nasty fire that could not be put out until the starting battery was disconnected. The hood and a lot of wiring burned to a crisp. I lost a tournament limit out of the deal.

You feel awfully damn isolated when you're dead in the water and the back of your boat is on fire.

My sister has 115 Merc (about 1999/2000 yr model) the stator bolts broke and made a mess of things. Check and see of all your bolts are in place or if anything came loose. Just curious if there is anything related.

Everything was fine. Merc told me that there shouldn't be anything outside the regulator that should cause this. The regulator simply failed.

Do you use wing nuts on your battery ?
