HUMMINBIRD NEW GPS RESPONSE ENHANCEMENT

NEW GPS RESPONSE ENHANCEMENT

One of the new software changes that has just been released for 2010 models currently being built (and January for older models and new 2010 models as they are released) is an enhancement that will allow the GPS receiver to update 4 times faster than it previously updated. Below is a list of the units that have the new software download available on Humminbird.com now.
718, 728, 778c, 788c, 788ci, 798c, 798ci, 1157c, 1197c

All other GPS combo models will have this new feature available January 2010.

This enhancement will result in a smoother response from the boat icon on the screen when driving to waypoints and other areas of interest. There is no menu setting or adjustments that have to be made to the units to enable this new feature. It will happen automatically when the new software is loaded into the unit.

IMPORTANT!
One very important topic related to this new enhancement is that the 4 times faster GPS update will not transmit through the INTERLINK box. Therefore, the GPS receiver(s) in the boat will have to be wired in a specific manner to allow the 4 times faster GPS response to work correctly. For boats that are utilizing INTERLINK systems there are two main setups. One is where there is (1) GPS receiver servicing both units on the boat and the other one is with (2) GPS receivers (one in the back and one in the front). Attached are illustrations showing how the GPS receivers, Interlink box, cabling and Y-cables should be connected in order to enable the 4 times faster GPS.

IMPORTANT NOTE: On the setup that only utilizes (1) GPS receiver the 4 times fast and will only work on the back unit and will not work on the front unit that is connected to the INTERLINK. You MUST have (2) GPS receivers hooked up per the illustration below in order to get the 4 times faster to both units.

If you have individual GPS receivers for each unit and aren’t using Interlink then you will get the 4 times faster GPS response.

Read this 4x still trying to digest.

So...If I am running my 788ci on bow with the internal transducer I should be fine even though I am sharing waypoints through interlink. For next year I'm going to need the Skeeter Boat Center boys to double check my wiring set-up to make sure my 997 GPS will work 4x.

Not sure if it's just me or not, but the 788ci model software is not out there yet. Restored my defaults on my unit, logged onto my pc, with sd card in hand and guess what, no 4.7 update listed.

Nic, do you see the update listed as a downloadable file when you log into your account?

I just checked for the update for my 788c (external antenna)....it's listed, it downloaded, and it's sitting on my PC desktop (M788C.4_700.bin).

Negative, just the last download from july of this year the 4.620, just logged on and double checked.

Hitting the hay... 3am departure for a two day Peshtigo and Oconto river smallmouth bonanza.

Was hoping to get this on tonight to mess with the next two days.

I just checked on the 788I and the update is still not posted yet. Just stay tuned in it is coming. As you stated if you are running interlink and have a GPS puck mounted on the transom and an internal gps unit up front you will be fine. You just need to check your unit on the bow with the internal gps just check your gps override and make sure you have internal gps selected. On the console unit you will need to make sure you have a accessory Y cable hooked to the console unit and the gps antenna hooked into the NEMA side of the Y cable and the Interlink hooked into the accessory side of the Y cable to get the gps update if you are running an Interlink.

From a Humminbird source:

The 788ci (and 788ci NVB) is going to be included on the 4.700 update but they just have not gotten it completed yet. Should hopefully only be a few more days.
The 4x update speed is not possible if the GPS Receiver is either connected to the InterLink or if a GPS Receiver is shared across the InterLink. This last means that if I had two units and only one had a GPS Receiver connected to it: the unit that the GPS Receiver was connected to would have the 4x updates but the second unit that shares the first unit’s GPS Receiver would not. I have connection drawings available if needed but basically the GPS Receiver has to be directly connected to the unit (either internally or by Y-cable) for the unit to benefit from the faster update speed.

The drawing that Greg is referring to is the one that Joby posted above.

There is a video of someone testing the GPS update here - Humminbird 4.700 Software Update . There are also some pictures and other videos. More cool stuff from HB!
