I've heard of this, but only from IDO. Is the V-Max HDPI?

Here is the thread.

A four stroke on a bass boat?? That"ll suck.

Not if it matches the performance of the current two strokes. That's what yamaha has planned with the not so secret super charged four strokes that are supposed to be announced this winter. Will they pull it off? Who knows. But kudos to them for trying. If it means I end up with a yamaha outboard on the back of my boat that is as reliable as the current 4 strokers with much less weight and performance similar to the HPDIs... I'm all for it.

From what I understand the two stroke motors are destined to be phased out across the board and I would assume that other manufacturers will follow suit as they figure out ways to improve 4 stroke performance.

thats too bad... 2 strokes are such a better application for an outboard, IMO.

You'll get no arguments from me there. I think it safe to say that compliance with EPA regs is and has been driving the evolution of outboards for some time now.

I don't think either the Opti or the E-TEC's are going away. I know my 250 E-TEC HO was cleaner than my F250 four stroke.

From Evinrude's website:
Three stars from the toughest emission standard in the world – the California Air Resources Board. Plus, we’re the only outboard to win the EPA Clean Air Excellence Award. No other brand of outboards produces fewer reportable emissions that the Evinrude E-TEC family of engines.

Another thing to consider, you are not getting any younger. You may not like the noise those other 2 strokes throw as you continue to gray. I mean it was cool in high school to have loud pipes, but remember, you got grand babies who are going to be fishing with you soon.

Seriously, the only "regret" a buddy has with his Ranger is the Opti vs Verado decision he made. The opti is really loud even when just putsing around the lake with the family.

All that said, the HPDI motor is really quiet compared to an Opti.

So your E-tec was cleaner than your four stroke even though it burns oil and consumes more gas? Interesting....

F250 - 2 star rated
250 HO - 3 star rated

This is from what I recall.

I think you're right, Luke. I thought it was the HPDI's that were two star rated. From the looks of this spec sheet I think that is that case.

As for the video that was posted... I like their enthusiasm but the video really doesn't show me much. I will be excited to hear some first hand reports once they start to come out.

I stand corrected - thanks for setting me straight.

However I have yet to find any documentation that shows the E-TEC or Opti going away just because they are 2 strokes - they are here to stay.

They are here to stay and when we have competition between engine companies the consumer wins which is a great thing.

I was looking back and now recall a Vmax HPDI that I ran one year was 2 star... i must be getting old
