10-16 recap

#827726 - 10/19/09 08:10 AM

We got a few hours in out of the Red Door Friday night. Three fish to show for it, two of them keepers JUST under 18". The fish wanted sticks over bent lips...rattles over not. Kinda figured that with no moon whatsoever. All fish came in less than 4 FOW and at about 1.5 MPH. One word of caution, if you venture out of the Door and head towards Barnevelds, there is a piling/phone pole sticking out of the water about a foot. I found it. Scared the bejesus out of the kids! Someone oughta jug that thing if they see it in daylight. It is in about 6 FOW. I am afraid if someone in a smaller boat would run into that, there could be problems.
At any rate, two fish came on jointed stick baits, and the other on a Thunderstick. Many fish marked over the deep breaks off the weeds. Large bait balls and very big hooks hanging around them. We were going to target them on Saturday night, but I had my low speed jet plug in the kicker. So we left early. The weed beds on the North end are extremely healthy this year, but we never raised a single fish over them. All fish came over rocks. The fish are out there but very spread out. Hopefully the end of the month moon brings them up shallow.
Temps over the rocks was 46 and over the weeds was 47.5.

We were out Saturday night 10-17 and fished the Indian Point and Garrison weeds, same kind of thing all our fish came on the rocks and none in the weeds. All the boats were gone by 11 we were only one of 2 boats left on the lake when the wind realy started to kick up at 1am. But till then it was a nice walleye chop. We did see one camera flash in by the Casino weeds but that was it.

Thanks for the update Tuck.

Heading up Friday for 3 nights; hopefully we'll be able to put together a big fish pattern during our stay.

Firday night was pretty slow for us also. Ended up with 6 fish. Most where eaters. Found our fish on the rocks same spot same pattern as has been working all year. Saturday we did pretty good on numbers and size back on the river.

spent saturday evening in the NW part of the lake,
very slow, did not see a camera flash go off.
we had 1 19" fish in 12 feet of water on a #9 shadrap. got nothing in shallower on stick baits. Went over to Myr reef and trolled over 5-7 feet with bent lips with no luck. too much wind for kicker, so had to use the bigger motor for that.
Very slow, all temps were 46.
Will head back up later in the month. IT has to go at some time.

We were up wed - sat. Fished wed, thurs, and sat night. Not a typical year for us at all. We only landed 10 fish in 3 nights One was a nice 27 incher but it was not good by any means. We found most of our fish on the shallow rocks as well.

Man this sucks. It has been two years in a row of an "off" bite.

Last year was a bit slow but we were at least able to find big fish each time out. This year is a low for me in the past 5 years. This summer was great but the fall is off for my boat.
Never the less, I'll be back on the 30th for another shot

We had a great year last year. Not as consistent of big fish, but we did OK. Certainly had better numbers. This year, well, the fish should be showing up shallow any day.

Some numbers recently shared with me suggest that we may not see many big fish in the system this year. We may have lost many of those fish to old age and natural causes. Inshore and offshore nets, anglers catches and Indian netting seems to support these facts.

With all due respect I don't totally agree. We pounded big fish in the basin in August this year. They are out there some where

Oh, I don't doubt that a bit! We did too...but I believe that is a small scale microsection of the biomass. (I am no expert...but do tend to listen to those that are to make my "Educated Guesses" as to what I think is going on in my little world.) But one thing for sure is the fact that over the last couple years, the fish going into my tally book have decreased in size and quantity. Last year during my Fall bite, I had no Mille Lacs fish go over 28". That comes from the major "Big Fish" locations that have proven themselves over the last 30 years. By no means am I saying I am right! What it should mean is that year classes coming up should fill the void meaning more keepers and less pigs coming to the boat. So far that has seemed to be the case as most reports tend to be leaning that way. Is it a bad thing for Mille Lacs? It depends on what kind of fish you want to catch. The launches around the lake did darned good this year on "Keepers" with a few toads mixed in. If you ask them...I'd bet they are loving it!!! I guess the next question that needs to be asked is "What will happen to our breeding females?" Should be interesting to watch. *Meaning that the larger "Over the hill females" were probably not contributing a whole lot to the spawn anyways... We could see a tremendous spawn this Spring. Time will tell.*

I believe there are plenty of big fish left in the system however they are very well fed on lake shiners and tulibee out in the basin.Same reason you arent seeing the numbers of fish in the shallow water. They arent going to leave the buffet to go look for food.Go out and find the bait and you will find the walleyes.Where do you think the Muskies have been hiding and Ill bet the perch are out there to enjoying the feast.

I was wondering about the perch also, there are none being caught in the bays, was thinking cycle, sometimes there is a huge perch die off for whatever reason. Wasn't there one about 4-5 years ago? Maybe they are staying put deeper b/c of the abundance of food, who knows!

Final 2009 records are not out yet but will reflect more smaller fish in the system compared to past years and less 25-28 inch fish compared to years past. More keepers showing up in the catches and a "normal" amount of big ones. That's what we are hearing from the DNR. Note the perch info.
