Alexandria, MN - Weekend Walleye Action

#827858 - 10/19/09 03:09 PM

The Alexandria area has been on fire the past few weeks! That's in between the snow and rain, that is This weekend was beautiful and it was great to spend it on the water. The fish were very cooperative and limits were easily had by each of my three groups. The small fish have been very aggressive but I've found no matter which lake I fish if I push shallow we find bigger fish.

Yesterday my client traveled all the way from Eastern WI to fish the Alex area. He had never boated a walleye before, but after a couple quick lessons we changed that. We boated over 50 walleye and he was having such a blast! He said "I think I'm goin to get me a boat!" This is why I guide, turning people onto the outdoors, I love it!

I had the chance to fish with Joe last Saturday night. Boy was it fun. We made it to the lake kind of late but the fish were waiting for us. Soon as we stopped we had fish on. I am not exact on how many fish we had, it must have been close to 40. I had a great time and Joe is a wonderful guy to fish with. If the fish don't bite you can just talk fishing with him. I don't think that happens too often though. I do think he held out on the big ones. We didn't catch any that were this big. Anyways thanks again Joe hopefully see you again soon.

Wow, sweet day... a 29" walleye and a shooting star to boot. I was on mille lacs at night years ago during a meteor show that was awesome to see. Thanks for sharing your report with us. I need to get back up there again soon to fish with Joe.

Joe, well done on putting first timers on fish. I had a stretch this summer where three outings in a row someone in my boat landed a personal best walleye and all of them were over 26 inches. That's a blast to watch someone hold up a tanker with that silly grin on their face.
Curious how you are targeting fish up in Alex at night? Is it a similar bite to the famed Mille Lacs bite that has been pretty much non-existant this year?

Micah, during the day I'm using jig/minnow combos and at night I'm trolling just as I would up on MilleLacs. The night trolling is quite good, but some nights I just get eaters and other nights a few hogs will find the bottom of the net. Keep in mind I've only been trolling about an hour after dark. I've been meaning to put in a full night of trolling this Fall, but I've usually caught so many fish by then that I've had my fill by the time evening comes around. It's always good to have that problem

The lakes up here have huge fish, much bigger than MilleLacs IMO, but just no where near the average size MilleLacs has. The lakes are clear, clean and usually only pressured in the Spring.

If you're looking to do some trolling up here I'd get a lake book for the area. Then you can pick out a lake with a decent number of large fish. All you have to then is put your MilleLacs skills to work and you should have a good time. Good luck

nice, i figured a walleye is a walleye doesn't matter the lake. don't spend a lot of time up in Alex, but if I do I know the guy to call. Sounds like you've got em dialed in up there. If you're ever down here and want a tour of Pool 2 give me a holler.

Keep up the Great Work Joe!! You've really got those Alex fish dialed in!! That is a very nice area, and has some awesome fishing. I look forward to hearing your reports from the big pannies in that area come hardwater time. I've fished for Gils a few times in areas up there, and it seems the Lake makeups really grow some sumos!! Keep putting the heat to them, and putting smiles on your customers faces!!

Thanks for the kind comments Chris. It won't be long and I'll be chasing these fish on the ice, but I think I have at least a couple more weeks to these walleye out of the boat!

As it sounds, you already know about the big sunfish around this area. Of course the true sumos are the most difficult to find, but I'll take an average 8"-9" sunfish all day long as I search for a couple big girls! I hope you can make it down for a weekend this winter? Give me a call anytime you're always welcome!

Hey Joe,

I appreciate the offer!! Don't let up on those EYES until you have too!! I bet it is commonplace for those looking to book ice trips with you to multi-species hunt also?? I know my limited experience on lakes in that area allowed for some flexability in the trip. Sometimes eyes in the evening and pannies throughout the day or pike on flags... Doesn't get much more fun than that!!

Your right Chris many of my full day trips are multi-species outings. We usually hit sunfish and crappies all day and then set up for a walleye bite in the evening. You said it, doesn't get much better

Hope to see you this winter Chris. That's if you can pull yourself away from all those Rainy fish long enough

LOL!! Sounds Fun!!

I know James mentioned shooting a Gil show with you early ice, and I may very well not be on the hardwater at that time yet. If so I might entertain the thought of coming down with you boys and help put the smackdown on those big gils!! I'm good at drilling holes

You guys have the right idea, more holes, more fish! Even though I'm still smackin the eyes out of the boat, all this ice talk gets me fired up. I even had to start up my new auger this morning. It's the first time I've put gas in my new StrikeMaster Solo and OOOOOOH I think it's all down hill from here. That sound, that sweet smell.... now I can't wait for that hard water
