I am going to put a new 20 horse fourstroke on my 14 foot boat. Does anybody have a rough estimate of the speed I should be able to get out of this set up?  The boat is just a plane jane floater if that helps any.

Targaman can you give us a little more detail as far as hull type, prop and pitch, weight of boat and gear. I'm surely no expert on this subject, but need to know more info to give you a ballpark figure.

20 mph to 25 mph, but like you said it is just a guess. Main things you need to concider is the amount of drag your boat will produce. More weight will make it ride lower in the water causing more drag. The second is your prop, diameter x pitch = thrust. How much thrust can your motor develope at recomended rpm with such n such prop. Just a guess a 20hp motor would run a 10x11 or a 10x13 with 14 ft boat. Don't take everything that I said as fact it is just a guess.

My father had a fairly bare 14ft V-bottom starcraft. With his 2 stroke 25hp Merc we can hit 27 with two guys and a light to medium load. We are not big guys though. Hope this helps.

My 14 foot crestliner with a 18 hp Johnson goes 23 with me and my buddy in it with tackle boxes and a minnow bucket. If you bog it down, well obviously you wont go as fast. My GPS showed speeds at 26 when I had her opened up on a solo voyage.

I had a 16 foot v-hull that I put a 20 horse on...easily got up to 23-25 MPH... great motor and worked well on the boat. Its also nice to be able to remove the motor for storage in the winter... I didn't like leaving the motor on the boat over the winter..

I have a Lund s14 with a Johnson 25 horse that will go 27-29 mph. Mine has a full floor. I have gotten 32 out of it but that was in my lighter days.

I would bet with the right prop and the right load you could approach 30 solo. Used to run an 18 horse on a 14ft'er with a shallow V and run 26-27mph by myself. The trick will be balancing the weight and the trim angle on the motor to get the best performance, have to run it right on the ragged edge of it porpoising. Sounds like fun, I miss my old river runners, need to pick up another one.

No gps here but an old 20 on a light 14' feels fast. Gas tank and battery up front really help the situation. Tiller handle extension would too.

My guess too would be 25+/-
I had a 12' plain aluminum with a 15hp Suzuki, a trolling motor up front and battery as eatra weight, lots of gear and would get 25 by myself, 22mph when adding another person
