Outstanding October- Pool 8 Bass

#829409 - 10/25/09 05:50 PM

October '09 will go down as probably the best month I have had all year on the river. I have only been out probably a half dozen times, but every time has been a day filled with fat, healthy, big fish just about every where I have gone. Community areas have filled up with fat 2-1/2 lb largemouth willing to take rat-l-traps, jerkbaits, and football jigs while bigger largemouth in the 3 to 3-1/2 lb range can be found close to the main channel in wood or on rock points. Big smallmouth have been the main target however this month, and I've had them going consitently on a select 5 or 6 wingdams that produce every day. The best wingdams I have are ones with an irregular feature in them like a hole or high spot that changes the way the flow goes over the dam. These areas tend to be the sweet spots. I have also noticed that the smallies are still on the wingdams with the heaviest current. Areas out of the flow have been producing nothing. Typically, I will fish the downstream side of a wingdam but this year I have adjusted to fishing the upstream side more often and it is paying off in a big way, especially when throwing a suspending jerkbait. The downstream side should not be overlooked, however, especially when fishing plastics, topwater, and crankbaits. In the past 3 outings, my limits have been 17-1/2 lbs, 14-1/2 lbs, and 16-1/2 lbs, anchored mostly by smallmouth. I have caught several 4 lb fish and a handful in that awesome 4-1/2 lb category. Overall it has been an unbelievable month. I will leave you with a bunch of pictures to look at, some from the old boat and some from the new. I will have some updates from the waining days of October hopefully as well, as this coming weekend is a 4 day break for us, and I plan to spend it in the boat

What I think is funny is that after you guys win a tournament and you won the new boat I'm not seeing any posts about how those fish are'nt as big as you say they are any more. Keep up the good work you now have a target on your back becauce everybody wants to beat the best!!!

I had the opportunity to get out again both Thursday and Friday this weekend as we did not have school either day. Thursday we made the adjustment to fishing largemouth when we realized that the current, high water, debris, along with adverse weather just made smallmouth fishing seem like a bad idea. Instead we went for largemouth in protected areas using a jig, jerkbait, rat-l-trap, and 6" flutter spoon to pound the crud out of some fat healthy largemouth. In an attempt at a little inner-team competition, and to get used to managing 10 fish in my livewell for a day, we kept our limits til the end of the day. At the end of the day Justin had 5 for 13 lbs 9 oz and I had 5 for 14 lbs 15 oz. overall it was a good day. I wish the water/weather conditions were better but that's what you get when you fish the "post season:" adversity. Friday I fished with Old rat and we had somewhat similar results. The extreme wind and lack of oil in my boat forced us off the water after 4 hours but we again put some healthy fat fish in the boat. Old Rat capped the day off with a fat 4 lber that ate his spinnerbait. All in all, a good weekend on the water. Wish It could have carried over onto the football field to make the ultimate weekend, but we just couldn't hang on in the 4th quarter (after controling the game quarters 1,2,& 3 a) as we took a season ending loss 27-20 to Marshfield (who beat Logan 47-12 last week) in round 2. I was still happy to have my senior season end with an impressive record of 9-2. We tied for conference champions and made it to round 2 of the playoffs. We got 9 wins, tied for most ever in Central football history. I got a good amount of playing time at Right guard and on special teams. Most of all, we had fun and I will never forget the times I had the past 4 years. I'll leave you with a change up pic since most are not familiar with the 2nd aspect of my life that consumes 5 months of the year, football.

well they were Cade's fish.. but I did something that he wasn't doing.. which was deep 5/8th or 3/4 ths spinnerbait..

He just smoked me on suspended jerk baits.. it wasn't pretty at first at all. in fact it was getting ugly for the guy in the back of the boat..

I won't tell you that I rigged up a float n' fly.. with no success.. but I only made like 3 or 4 casts with it..

what was very critical was retrieve speed. slow.. S...L.. O.. W...

if you thought that you were going too slow, you needed to slow down..

in the end, I made a come back.. but with the exception of the big boy, all my fish were smaller then Cade's...
