Pool 2 - 494 Acess Closure 28 October

#829591 - 10/26/09 12:02 PM

Howdy,

There are signs up on Verderosa Avenue...the road to the 494 access on Pool 2....that say the road will be closed starting 28 October. I asked one of the people working down there how long the road would be closed, and he said it would be closed on just the 28th. So for that one day it will be a public no-access (sorry I couldn't resist).

Yesterday we managed to be on the right wing dam at the right time throwing the right bait for once, and we caught a few fish. A Smallie, a White Bass, a Sheepie, and then 20 and 24 inch Walleyes. Following the suggestion in Micah's report I tried a dark colored K-Grub and that was what we got all our action on.

Thanks for the info about the boat launch Steve. I was thinking about heading down there wednesday afternoon, guess not now. Could always launch downstream I suppose. Good to hear you caught some nice walleyes.

With 494 closed, where do you guys usually launch? As luck would have it I'm planning to meet a buddy at the landing on... you guessed it... wednesday the 28th.

Thanks for the info Steve. Glad to hear it is only for one day. No sense calling the city and raising a stink over it then.

You guys left one walleye on that wing dam. The next dam down from there I caught 4 on and missed a few others. Also took 2 other fish in the area. They seem to be working that area.

So what where those eagles up to last night. They sure where raising a stink about something. It was neat to watch them.

Rootski, glad to hear something I offered helped put some fish in the boat. For me, that's what it's all about and the reason I post most of the time. I can't tell you how much I have learned from this site and folks on IDO being willing to share information about the river. That and time on the water are two of the most valuable resources a guy could ask for.
As for launching, I would launch at Lilydale if I were you James, the no wake in St. Paul is worth it to get to the airport section and the rest of my action has been north of the 494. One could hit Lion's Levee also and fish the section just south of 494, but I haven't been on those dams since late summer with all the action upstream of there.
Hope you find em and whack a few.

I use Lions Levee simply because there is a dock, little to no current and plenty of parking. You are only 3-4 minutes south of 494 as the crow flies.. or in your case, the skeeter flies!

I agree with Jon the Levee ramp is much more user friendly. My only concern is the safety of my vehicle since it is so isolated and I see non-fisherman coming and going constantly. I have had nor heard of anyone having problems but that's how I feel when I'm there.

Never had a problem. The Refinery plant security drives through there at least a few times every hour.

But you know my weird attitude toward thieves, Mike. If you want it, take it! I don’t lock my truck. So please don’t wreck anything in the process of your thievery. Have a little pride in your work! (I need a bumper sticker that says that!) And god help you if you get caught!

Mike, I was out there Sunday morning and has 3 eagles going crazy! two fought over a fish that one of them ended up getting and earlier back on the bottom end of an island they were going nuts about something for a while!!! Pretty cool listing to them. Thought the same thing any how.

The 2 that live north of the island where going at it over something. The one on the island was just calling to them every now and again. There sure are a lot of them down there this year.

I was down on pool 2 for the later part of the afternoon yesterday. It looks like they are closing a gap in the bridge deck directly over the road so that would be a good reason to close the landing. Noticed a few boats out netting yesterday. They had nets in multiple areas up and down the river.
There is a good amount of logs and timber floating in the water. The waves, caused by the south wind, made seeing the motor wreckers very difficult. I bumped a nice log on my way up river and near the launch on my trip back after dark. Only action was a 19" sauger, 19" walleye and 3 sheepies. I did miss a few other short hits. The 19" walleye that crushed a paddle tail made dealing with wind worth the trip. It was one of those hits that make a walleye guy happy. The other 4 fish hit a purple hair jig.
