Handheld auger - please advise!

#829876 - 10/27/09 10:35 AM

Need new auger this year. Are the Lazers that much better than the Moras? What do you guys like best??

Steve, I would not advise buying a Mora. Flat out, they don't cut as nice as a Laser. I have owned both, I had a Mora back in High School and it only lasted two seasons, tops. The blades got dull quick and they just didn't work as nicely. The Lazer I have now is very nice- still cuts like the day I bought it. If you do go with a hand auger, it's the only one I'd buy.

After using both the Mora and the Lazer……yes the Lazer is that much better. The blades last longer and the Lazer cuts ice like butter. I also like the 6 inch for cutting by hand.

Lazer hands down, I've got an 18 vlt dewalt drill attached to a 5" lazer. It cuts ice very fast and usually one set of blades will last the whole year. Dan

The laser for sure. I got rid of the mora a few seasons ago after putting on new blades yearly. The laser has been my early ice weapon the last 2 years and the blades are as sharp as the day i bought it. Less tendinitis too!

Lazer is the only way, worth the money. You will not be dissapointed in a Lazer

Leave the 8" auger at the store or you may die on the ice..... that's too much like work!!!!!!!

I love my 5 inch Laser. It is plenty of hole and is really easy cutting, especially early ice. The 5 lets less light into your hole, just keep the guard on when not in use those blades are sharp!!!

For a little more money my vote would be for the Nils. Going on 3 seasons and not getting any duller.

Lazers are nice but the best are Finbore or Nils.

Aside from being a bit heavy a Jiffy is a good and dependable machine. The blades stay sharp too.

I have to agree with Shaley. Bought a Nils 2-3 years ago and it is the greatest. Still super sharp. Goes through the ice like butter. Weighs nothing. Pricey for a hand auger though. And when I say it is sharp, OH MAN, I think I still have a bit of a scab.

I don't think jiffy makes a hand auger. My vote is for nils or a finbore. Also, I seen a Mora of sweden hand auger that is the finbore style.

From what I have read online, it seems nils master is the way to go. I don't know anything about them, but think I might buy one now. Anyone know a good place to buy them?

Lazer 6" for early season. For very first ice I usually just use a spud.

I had two Moras before I got the 5" lazer and should of went that route to start. After early ice I use a S/M lazer mag 8".

I'm going to email this post to my dad. I think he will get a kick out of it after all of those years of slave labor/hand drilling I did for us. I got a good laugh when I read this one.

For you guys that have the nils master hand augers, would you suggest the 6" or 8" model?? I am planning on using it all season long, so wondering if the 6" would be a better choice for when the ice gets thick. A lot of reviews say that the 8" is still really easy even when the ice gets thick, so I can't decide.
