Finally the Pond Comes Alive This Fall

#831337 - 11/01/09 04:31 PM

My Dad and I decided to hit the Nov full moon weekend this last Friday and Saturday nights. Despite a very slow Oct full moon weekend of fishing we decided to keep a positive attitude and find out how to get some of these big fall females to crush some cranks. We were welcomed Friday night with winds at 20 mph (consistently gusting to 30 mph), freezing temps, and rain, sleet, snow mixed precip. Despite the tough conditions we had our mind set on trying to dial in some of these fish and although it was not "lights out" by any means we did manage eight fish with two crossing the 27 inch mark with the rest in the mid twenty inch range. Lure of the night, which got all the fish was HJ #10 in Tennessee Shad trolled in the 9 foot range . Water temp was at 44.3 degrees so I kept the speeds from 1.2 to 1.5. Saturday night we hit the water to a perfect fall evening and hooked up to our first fish a solid 26" and for the next six hours continued to pick up solid, fat eyes at the rate of 2-3 fish an hour. We had a total of 19 fish for the night with the majority in the mid twenty inch range and the biggest hitting the tape at 28". Again HJ's in Tennessee Shad trolled in the 9-10 foot depths took all the fish. Speeds were 1.3-1.5 to start the night and when the moon showed through the clouds and slowing down to 1.2-1.4 when the clouds covered the moonlight. We ended the night with a total of 19 eyes. Finally the fall bite I wait all year to fish and even better was being able to share the boat with my Dad. We had the lake to ourselves only seeing two or three other boats either night. If you are a fan of this bite all I can say with confidence the bite is started into full swing and I feel like it will continue until ice up. Here are a few pictures from our weekend.

Weeds are starting to die off and lay down really good so we concentrated on these areas. We did spend a little time fishing the rocks but the size was lacking and definitely not as many takers.

Great pics Tim! Looks like I should have drove up. It was a great night to be on the water. Like I told you fishing was good up in Alexandria but nothing over 20" that night. Way to hammer em up there when so many people were claiming a dead sea

Great report. Dad is 89 now and can hardly get out. How I wish I could walk in your footsteps.

Nice work Tim -

That was our attitude exactly, that they had to bite somewhere somehow. It did feel good getting them dialed in with some consistency as the previous outing in Oct was pretty humbling.

I was very excited to see Tim's post of the pictures from our recent trip. I think it is only fitting for me to post my response to some of the post. As most of you guys and gals are much younger than I am (66 years young), I would like to say what a terriffic thing to fish with my son Tim. I realize, that it is hard for a person to drive to the lake, then drive the boat all night, then drive home after fishing. I can only say that it is such a rush to get to go fishing at my age (66) with my son. The patience displayed was heart warming and never to be forgotten. I can tell each and every one of you young people that it is a true sacrifice to do this but much appreciated. Remember young people "take your dad fishing cause some day may be too late." Thanks Tim for the terriffic trip--it was much appreciated. Love Dad
