First time on the Red

#832181 - 11/04/09 08:16 AM

A bunch of years ago now, I had almost completely dropped out of fishing because of career obligations, time with the daughter growing up, running field trials with my beagles and all the things you get involved in. While reading a magazine about their annual fishing contest winners, I noticed that the name of the winner for the year was listed along with his winning record (channel cat) and his home phone number. I rolled this around in my head and wondered what would come of it if I called him. Well nothing ventured, nothing gained so I picked up the phone and as they say, the rest is history. I will not give his name as I do not have permission but he was wonderfully nice to me. I told him I had not fished for several years and wondered if I came to his place if he would take me out and show me what he was doing. You Bet! Then we ventured into a conversation about the Red River. It was like watching a bird dog get a hot scent. I could almost see his tail wag.

"So you want to go to the Red River". I offered to pay for the trip if he would take me up. Within a week we were on our way (I don't like to mess around either).

When we got there, the river was up and jumping making fishing difficult. Boats were scattered all over the river mostly hugging the bank to try to find some relief from the ferocious current. We fished all morning with almost no luck at all. He did not believe in bringing bait with. He took a can of worms and caught his own and fished with that. We caught a few bullheads which we kept for cut bait and finally, I caught a sucker about five pounds. He pounced on that immediately.

By that time, we were cold and tired and headed back to camp for some lunch and a nap. We went back up river about 4:00 PM looking for a place to fish. I spotted a current break where a little point stuck out and left a narrow strip protected from the current. I talked him into dropping the anchor and giving it a try. 400 pounds of catfish later we pulled the anchor and went back to camp to sleep like dead men. We never moved from that one spot except the catfish would break us loose once in a while and we would drift a few feet until the anchor caught again.

I have never had that kind of luck since at the spot, but only once in my many trips up there have I failed to catch a large cat there.

Photos are 1) One of my first Red River cats. Just a little feller about 10#, 2) BK looking for a place to anchor, 3) The dam at Lockport with the river roaring 4) An almost black cat I caught 5)Yours truly with a real cat.

Ok, are you saying I'm that old or have a neat boat?

I've fished that same spot in photo #4!

There's nothing like the Red and nothing better than to figure it out during a tuff bite.

My first trip up there was with Dennis Steele, Dark30 and Manny White. Never forget that one.

We came back on a Tuesday, I was showing my Favorite Wife the photo's on Wednesday evening and after work on Thursday, we were on our way back up again.

What a hoot!

Sure wish I could find the time to make it back there again.

Thanks for sharing.

The Red River of the North is truly a one of a kind fishery that ranks right up there with the best. I made my first trip up there this past fall and it won’t be my last, I can guarantee you that. 4 of us with decades of catfishing experience and everyone of us caught a personal best!

With as much as I fish now, I would probably need an intervention if I lived up there.

Beagles are fun aren’t they? We bought ours from a guy in Jordan here that is big time into the field trial thing. He has a big course set up in his backyard. I always wanted to get mine involved with that, but never seem to find the time with fishing always getting in the way.

I raised beagles for 25 years and published "The Hunting Beagle Handbook" many years ago now. It is still available on eBay I think. I probably killed more rabbits than would fit in a pickup truck. Season is open, I should go get something for the pot.

The land I was training on was owned by others who sold it to folks who didn't want me there. You can't have good hounds with out a decent training ground so had to give it up. Those are the softest eyed cuddliest hardest hearted dogs in the world. Love them

Sorry BK, I meant you had a neat boat. Must be some kind of fun trolling?

When you ask the wife if you can go fish - doesn't it feel a lot like asking your mom if you can go play with your friends?

Tired of McDonalds? Try some BK

Cool! Those big ones can slap you around a bunch. We have an even better one that brought a guy to his knees if you know what I mean. Don't hold them straight up

Great video.

Exactly!

It's always the first shovelnose that reminds me they are best off held horizontally. After the first one it's easy to remember.

Obviously you get the picture. A shovelnose ought to be just about the right length.

And yet I'd rather be slapped in the face by a big fish than have to go to work any day... hell even a tailslap to the groin is better than going to work.

At least you're fishin.

I started working when I was 12 years old. I don't mind a a bit telling them to send the check to the house. I'll cash it later when I get back from fishing.
