Tire pressure?

#832763 - 11/06/09 11:22 AM

Hey Guys,

Should you check tire pressure when the tires are cold or warm? I know that this could make a difference.

Thanks,

Ideally cold. In our setting (a shop) not always possible.

Some tires will actually say what pressure they are supposed to be Cold or Warm right on the sidewall.

But what if those suggested pressures differ from what is says on the drivers door? I think I am suppose to go with what the door says. Or do I have it backwards? Now I am really second guessing myself.

Unless hauling with the vehicle fully loaded you want to disregard the sidewall. Set the tire pressure "cold". All that means is let the tires temperature stabilize after being driven. It isn't all that scientific or complicated as some make it.

Anything I have ever seen says cold.

MNF/dealer usually recommends door numbers for best preformance/handling.

Although, those numbers are usually lower (in my experience) than the tire max psi rating... usually you might get better MPG with more psi, but worse "road gripping" ability. Is this generally correct, guys?

Honestly I just run car and/or light truck tires at 35 PSI. I run the tires in my Mustang at 30 on the road because it softens the ride and at 32-35 on the autocross track (depends on the day, hot and sunny == higher pressure) because you get better hard-surface traction and control with a higher pressure.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I've tried to find the recommended pressures on either the door pillar or the tires.

Cold. Realistically all the same pressure is most important.
Forget what's on the tire. Check the inside of driver door and use that as a starting point. Watch how they wear and adjust from there. I run my truck tires at 38. Back in my youth when I knew nothing I ran a set of TA Radials at the max 50 that was on the tire. Hard ride but dam they lasted a long time. You'll get better mileage with higher pressures but sacrifice some ride and sometimes offroad traction. Just dont underinflate.

You guys have it figured out. Too much air just wears the middle of the tread out.

We have missed one important thing in this discussion. Tire application has a huge impact on tire pressure. Those little boat trailer tires the size of a bowling ball usually run at least 60 and maybe 90. Check the side wall. My one ton pickup takes 80 and the 5th wheel trailer 50.

Also those little tires will blow up like a cannon shot if they are under inflated.
