Punching the clock

#832915 - 11/07/09 05:20 AM

Have you ever worked in a place where you had to punch a time clock? Boy did I hate that. I'm not sure I ever did any other thing that made me feel so much like cattle. Stand in line to go to work, stand in line to go home. Shuffle along until it was your turn. Some bean counter wanting to know why you punched 3 minutes before time to. Don't get me started.

Punching the clock fishing is another story. Those of us who anchor and wait (they also serve who only sit and wait) for a bite have to set some serious boundarys.

In my boat, once I'm anchored and have the lines out, the fish have 30 minutes to show up and make themselves known. Once the bite starts, they have 15 minutes after the last fish was released and the lines are back out to bite.

If I'm doing something wrong, wrong bait, wrong hook size, wrong leader material, whatever, we will figure that out as we go, but my time on the water is limited so the fish have a limited time to get busy or I'm out of there and down (or up) the river to the next spot. It is surprising how many bites there are in the last 2 minutes. Is is also surprising how few there are in the next 30 after you pass the dead line.

By punching the clock, it gives you a chance to find active fish. Sometimes they don't cooperate, but that is why it is called fishing not catching.

Some of us are too impatient to use an anchor even if it is the best method of presentation. But we use similar times to determine when to move. I think you are seeing the same as we are. So we agree I'm salaried and don't get me started.

At times I don't even care if I am catching fish. I will anchor up and just kick my feet up and relax. Time on the water is time on the water to me. Catching fish is a bonus. Some days I really have the itch then I keep on moving to try to find fish. I think I may a little more lazy than you northstar. I think your theory above will definitely produce more fish than mine.

Hey! I'm on salary AND punch the clock!

When I'm searching for fish early spring and later in the summer (August) I'm the run and gunner. Thirty minutes about covers it for my boat too at those times.

The other times I give the spots longer, because I know there's a fish or two there. Replacing the bait more often than moving.

Now sturgeon on the other hand, is a get bit or move type of fishing. Although there's been many times when I move back to a spot it produces very well.

One catfish trick I've found that works very well is pulling the bait in about a foot 5 minutes before moving. I don't know how many fish we've boated when we've started packing up to move and the last rod in the water gets nailed.

Now see, you live and learn. I don't think I have ever done that. You can bet I'm going to.
