I see Bay Point all the boats get pulled out but the marina directly south and the one on the Wisconsin side still have boats in them.
Does the river not freeze up downtown Red Wing?
I also see seagulls following barges.
I'm guessing they are feeding on the stunned bait fish that get pummelled when the barge passes by?
So could I assume that when a barge passes it could also be a dinner bell for any fish in the area?
Or am I just thinking to much? (in danger of nose bleed)

The boats will stay in the entire season correct....and to answer the barge question I dunno..there is times in the spring fishing the "Y" I would say yes and there is times I would say it hurt the fishing so I am not to sure how to answer that question. Yes the birds are picking up baitfish though behind the prop wash.

Its not only barges, I see the birds following the big cruisers too. I do notice they don't follow me, probably a wise move...

Baypoint freezes solid, city marina somtimes but not always. The boats on the wisconsin side get froze in pretty good every year. The flying rats chase the barges to eat all the gizzard shad that get churned up by the props . The fish all move to the dam for the winter and there are NO fish below town, even though the river stays open to the head of the lake unless the winter is very cold.

I knew someone that did a study of the impact barges have on fish populations. Barges grind up literally TONS of fish of ALL species. The largest number are shad, but according to the study, ANYTHING that swims in the channel can end up being gull food.

You should see the size of some of the paddle fish that wash up on shore down at Everts that get sliced and diced by the barges

As for the barges and the fishing I would tell you that they will hurt you for the short term on the Mississippi. My reasoning for that is they will usually totally change the current in the area you are fishing which will generally shift the fish around for awhile until they settle back in.With that said you take an extremly clear river like the St. Marys that has freighter traffic and I have seen it help. The freighters come thru and you jump right in behind them and genrally have a good bite while water is dirty and stirred up so it can go either way.
