Rod Holders

#835369 - 11/18/09 08:09 AM

Now when it comes to technology, I like to be as up to date as anyone. I do draw the line at some things however. Rod holders to me are mostly a pain in the rear. No matter what kind you buy, you have to do something to get the rod out of the holder: lift it back, undo something ect. ect. ect. I really don't like those things because I think it tips the fish off and scares them away. Since I really dedicate myself to catching big fish they are by definition old fish and therefore probably wise and spooky in the first place. Last thing I need is a fish getting spooked by me fumbling around trying to get the rod out of the holder.

I have Springfield seat bases. You know the ones where the post is suppose to pop right out of the base but doesn't? Well, that post that is used to give someone a pleasant ride when you have guests is very useful when you are fishing.

I simply pull the seat, insert my ultra high tech rod holder and I am in business. Honest, this is what I use all the time (even if BK wouldn't when he was in the boat).

I did have to upgrade them. When I went to Canada, they made me throw them away because they were "raw" wood and Canada will not let that in because of their forestry industry. Can't be too careful. So the next time, I peeled the bark off and they still made me throw them away. Now I don't want to keep going around damaging trees, so the next time, I painted them and that made them processed wood so they were good to go.

Works, saves bucks, what more could you ask. By the way, the reel catches in the fork if that big one comes along and tries to yank the rod out of the boat.

Notice in the second photo, there is one on each side of my knees. They are the new high tech model.

Now that's funny!

Inexpensive and workable.

Maybe this should be in another post but I noticed you open your bail and use the line out alarm. Do you think that puts more fish in the boat?

Since I use the 3/0 circle hooks, I leave the bail closed and when I pick up the rod I put tension on the fish and the circle does it's job. I think the only time, I have the bail open is when I'm holding the rod.

I was talking to one fella once that turned his drag pretty much off. Loosened it just so the current wouldn't take out line. He didn't need a lightly tipped rod, because he detected his bites by noticing the line going out.

Only thing missing is the uncle josh's carp bait...

Reminds me of sitting on the river banks fishing.

fwiw I use the Folbe holders and yes they all seem to have something you have to do to remove the rod, but the Folbe's have you lift straight up, not a problem once you use them a few times.

Although they don't work very well on the river like yours would...

That's where the idea came from. Just transferred it from the river bank to the boat.

I'll have to look up Folbe. Don't know them. Got a pic?

Picture? There's video!

I have 4 of them and they are perfect for catten and were actually designed for sturgeon and salmon fishing.

...but not even close to the price of a painted stick!

I never got past mojogunter's post. What did I miss?

I hate rod holders too, but sometimes they are a necessary evil in a boat where you are pushing the number of legally allowed occupants.

I like pcp pipes, er, pvc pipes, although they are spendyer compared to those wooden ones.

BK must have had a late nite or something, he never said a word about the white rod. Could be he's getting a little mellow in his old age? jerr

That was an old picture. He knows better now.

All I can say is Y sticks in the boat, that is frickin' awesome!!

I can safely say if I don't have good rod holders, I'm going to be loosing gear every now and then. Sometimes a fish hits so hard you can't get to that rod.

BK knows it is true. He has been in the boat and he wouldn't use them. Can you believe passing up an old tradition like a y stick?

Cool idea, but you're not going to catch me using it. I like the ability to position my rods just about any way I please, and I like the security of my RAM holders. The Folbes are the bees-knees, but they are priced as such!

I know everyone has their favorite. For me you can’t beat the simplicity and durability of Driftmasters. I’ve tried just everything too.

The Y stick in the boat is sweet and you gotta get some river cred for that

This thread is killing me. Funny as it sounds, I turn my scotties sideways and use them like a forked stick most of the time. I have 4 scotties and two driftmasters on the transom. I don't like to take too much time to get a hook set when a bobber is down. The extra 10-15 seconds has cost me quite a few fish who drop the rig.

Yep, I agree Kev.

A lot of times, my rod is just leaning against the side of the boat. It’s tough to get a sponsor for that one though LOL

There's many "types" of fishermen out there...

In my boat I would have many broken rods by now without rod holders. I can see the rod tips of all rods in the holders where if they were lying down, it just doesn't happen.

Now fishing with a more seasoned cat/sturgeon guy, like you Dtro, I don't have to watch the other rods. Hanson on the other hand....

Pretty much like anything...the rod holder that's in your boat is the best.

Folbe's are awesome for the trolling or cat/sturgeon guy, unless the design of our rig doesn't allow for the rod handle to sit inside the boat...but they do come with a price. I've had far too may folks move into the Advantage holder after using them for it to just be hype.

Folbe's aren't a sponsor, nor do I expect them to be. But for the record Joel is one heck of a nice guy that I've only met over the phone, with a heck of a good product.
