Line counter reel??

#835777 - 11/19/09 11:26 AM

Looking into picking up a couple for trolling walleye & Striper. Don't plan on any Great Lake stuff just smaller lakes and river. Have you found one that I should be looking into?
Thanks

I have 8 or 10 copies of the Diawa Sealine. I use the smallest one (Sealine 17) for long lining and 3-way trolling, and the 47s for leadcore.

I think the casual troller will do fine with these reels. The Accudepth II's are also cost effective choices. I troll....a lot....and that is taking a toll on my 17s, so I plan to make a slow migration into something else. My only issue about doing that now is the investment I've made in all of those Sealines.

The Daiwa Sealine 17's are hard to beat. They're incredibly durable so you can count on them for many years of reliable service.

If you're not going to be fishing lead core or have need for large amounts of large diameter line (14#+ mono) the 17's get the thumbs up for me. They're light, fit well in the hand and have been a mainstay in my boat for quite a few years now with zero problems on the 6 that I own.

I picked up 2 Cabellas Depthmaster trolling rods/reel cvombos this summer and I really like them. These were my first trolling rods so I don't have anything to compare them too, but they server their purpose and get the job done well.

I have always read here and heard other places that you spend your money on your jiggin rod and save money on your trolling rods.

Here's the link. I think if you go to the store they are cheaper too. I got mine for $50 a piece. And you get to go to Cabelas, who doesn't like that??

the 17's are a smaller size, but would be great for most presentations.
I really like the feel of the Diawa Sealine-27's, slightly larger. It's a terrific reel, and it's all you need for many years of trouble free fishing.
Go to a store where you get the feel of both models in your hands, to help make up your mind. I'd only consider the Diawa Sealine line of reels.
good luck.

While we are on the subject, one of my sealines sometimes when you put the switch in the forward position the handle doesn't engage but if you use the crank it does. I think I have a broken something in there does anyone have a good reel repair service they'd recommend?

If the budget allows look into the Shimano Tekota line including the 300 LC for most applications or the 500 LC for more line capacity. I have also ran the Sealines and Accudepths and for the price are excellent value, especially the new style Accudepths. However I still find myself slowly changing over to Shimano Tekotas and so do the guys using them in my boat for the first time. All depends on how much trolling you do and I must say that I love trolling.

I agree, the tekotas are the bomb if you can get past the price tag.

Is it true the reel needs a full spool of line for the counter to work right?

Yes this is very true and they can be off quite a bit with a low spool. Confirmed it by measuring on the front yard. (with neighbors giving me strange looks as to what i was up to)

Diawa introduced a new premium version of the sealine this year as well.As I understood,it offers a sealed drag system for saltwater use and my first impression was that the "feel" just wasnt the same as a sea-line.

I have to agree with T Ellis,I am seeing more of our die hard trollers going to the tekota. No one likes what they pay for them, but have yet to see anyone have a complaint or not buy another one when needed.

Daiwa Sealines. I do a lot more troling than your average bear. Never had an issue with the sealines. They take a beating, and keep on working. I still have the original sealines I bought years ago and they still perform. Some of my sealines are on their third rod. 17 or 27 for most presentations (I personally go with 27s). Had the accudepths, had them fail. Have slowly replaced all accudepths with sealines.

Tekota or Sealine Sealine or Tekota Pocket Fisherman or Snoppy pole
For price it sure sounds like the sealine is a good buy. I've been checking around and there isn't all that large of a selection to choose from when comes to counters until you get into salt water

Tekota or Sealine Sealine or Tekota

Smackem, it all comes down to how much trolling you plan on doing. Either way you really couldn't go wrong as I and many others have used both with great success. I lucked out and fishing once with Brad J and Tina using Tekota's my wife turned and said to me, "you have to get some of these reels." That sure helped with the sticker shock since the hardest hurdle was overcome.
