Welcome aboard!!!
In this area most use a Water Spike (large) or Ricter(sp?)
I chose a spike becasue of weight of it. If I fished more in the spring when the flow is higher, I'd go with the Rictor.
I'm sure other rats will chime in.

I bought a WaterSpike 2 years ago for use on the Mississippi and I wish I had done it years ago. It works very well in rocks, sand or "boot sucking mississippi mud".

Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, "Dam!"

I've been using the Spike for quite a few years and I've not found anything better. Regarding the Richter... I know some guys just love them but I've had horrible luck getting it to stay stuck this year on windy days on Pepin, Rainy and Nipigon where the Spike would have had no issues. There's nothing more frustrating than carefully positioning your boat, getting set up exactly where you need to be, and then having the anchor pull loose the first time the wind kicks up.

I disagree.
It would be when a person leave his $70 Richtor on the bottom. That's frustrating!

Done that one myself .

Another happy Waterspike owner. The only thing I dislike is that in funky current areas (ie under dams), I tend to twirl and swing a bit due to the amount of line I need to let out.

Navy anchor for the river. Spike is an "ok" option for me. Usually only comes out on a windy day on Mille Lacs.

I used the drop n stay shock absorber for the first year this summer and it really helped keep my boat on the spot and cut down on the amount of rope needing to be let out to anchor. It was really, really noticeable on windy days anchoring on Mille Lacs. It cut down on the boat breaking the anchor loose of its hold and also would help on boat sway i would think for the river.

After losing two (stuck) Richters on P-4, I bought a Waterspike from Dean at Everts bait shop...No problems for 6 years so far. Dean will set you up and you'll be ready to fish!

How important is the chain? Ive been fishing with a guy who doesn't have the chain and it works great. I am on the look out for a spike for the simple fact its a lot easier on the body!
Also is anyone using 2 spikes for sideways anchoring?

I've never used one. I've had the same rope and same anchor for 11, maybe 12, years now.

James you must not be talking about the run of the mill nylon rope then right?

I'm not sure how big James is...but I think mines smaller. (Please, no comments)
I have what I would call a mid size spike and I've tried it without a chain. Works better with one.
I'm going to guess the larger spikes

Richter all the way--no place to store a waterspike in my boat. Same Richter for years now--that being said, will most likely lose it next trip.

I loved my Richter but it is on the bottom of the Red River somewhere. I still have a small one on the little john boat. Now I use Red River anchors. Make myself. Take a 24" piece of pipe, pour it full of lead (used tire balancing weights), weld a 1/4" X 1" steel cross on the bottom and short piece of chain to the top. Holds great, lose one and you can make another one. Commercial anchors cost an arm and a leg. We usually carry a spare.

I have used the spikes but the olny issue I have ran into is the amount of line you have to put out... I like the weight though. Right now I still use the old 30 lb river anchor and it that doesnt hold I drop a 18 down with it Sounds like overkill but I dont move. Also in moderate to low flow I can put my boat on the spot and drop the anchor and no need to let much line out. Does give you a work out when fishing on the go but you get used to it!

There is an anchor upstream of the snag on the Wisconsin side by the dam.Marked by a pepsi bottle, guy couldn't pull it up so he cut the rope and tied on a bottle. Bk,maybe you could dive down and retrive it?
