Hi Guys I'm new to the site, so be patient. I have a question...do any of you use "reel weeds" and if so are they worth it? Please no vendors or people trying to sell them. I fish a big flat that ofcourse the weeds die off after awhile, these things look good just wondering if they work Thanks

Hey bick,
I have 8 lines of reel weeds and I love em. I fish a local metro lake and will surround my 2 man with them and they do seem to attract the fish and the fish seem to hand around them. I would give them the thumbs up. In my opinion they are worth the money. I am sure you will get many more responses that will say the same.

Hey Bick! Welcome to IDO...
Reel Weeds do work very well...they do attract and hold fish- I use them when I am going to sit inside my otter house. I can also use them if I am hole hopping, and keep checking back on the weeds to see if fish have found them yet. They are also extremely fun to watch fish interact with when using a camera.
The camera cable structure also works extremely well!
And to answer pros and cons question-
Reel Weeds were the first "fake weeds" on the market, and they are high quality and extremely durable- If you play around with all brands, I am willing to bet you will find yourself liking the reel weeds the best.
Bick- I see you are from Clinton, I was just there two weeks ago filming a Custom Jigs & Spins commercial..

Welcome to IDO bick  They work very well in attracting fish.... I drop 2 Reel Weeds down, about 3 feet either side of the holes I am fishing. Imagine your a school of fish or just a couple for that matter...and you see weeds 50 yards away, in an otherwise desolate bottom... what would you do ??? Well head over and check it out !!! Hey look, a injured baitfish  I was skeptical at first myself, but just go to a spot and fish it awhile...if you have a camera, this is even better. Then drop a weed done and watch the fish come in

I'm still skeptical if they really help, they haven't seemed to hurt. I like the concept/idea, I like to think they work, no real solid connection for me yet, truth be told I don't ice fish near as much as I'd like.

Welcome to the posting side of Ido!
Just opened my box up from their summer slumber. They're on their 3 or possibly 4 year now.
There was another brand out there called Weed Eze. They are out of business.

I didn't feel they were worth the trouble most days and didn't seem to hold the fish like the website says they do. Certainly not worth drilling 5 extra holes and then putting them down and pulling them out. Especially at the end of a long day with a solid hike ahead of you.
It would be one of the last ways to spend my disposable fishing fund.
Just a different POV.

I've actually got some for sale. It's a good number of them to start out with, and you'd save yourself some $ to give them a try.

They've worked particularly well for me in small natural lakes and farm ponds in exactly the circumstances you speak of. We actually caught quite a few bass that would use the weeds as an ambush point.
As one poster pointed out, I think there's a diminishing point of returns in terms of the number you put out, which is why I'm getting rid of a few of the ones I have.

Are you using a hand auger ??? I will spend 5 minutes of time, putting down weeds & reeling up, so on the long hike home, I am actually bringing fish along...

I've got to agree with Big G. With today's augers, the extra few minutes it takes to put a weedbed down where there are no weeds is well worth the effort. I like to think of it as putting out decoys for ducks. The weeds become the attractant and, especially where there is no structure on a flat or sand bar, fish will tend to come and check it out. Without them, fish may swim by a distance away without noticing a baited hook or jig. It makes perfect sense to me. I use mine all the time and think they're great. As someone mentioned earlier, with a camera down there you really get to see how fish positively react to them. Just my opinion though.

Hot Panfish Bite with many 15 in crappies
Anytime I dropped the Reel Weeds the bite STOPPED. I figured it was a fluke and moved to new holes. Fished without Reel Weeds, and the bite was good. Dropped the Weeds down...not one bite!
Frustrated, I dropped my camera down only to find multiple pike in and around the Reel Weeds.
Since the season was closed for eyes and pike, I didn't use the Reel Weeds anymore that year.
They are a great tool that many times will put more fish on the end of your line.

As much as it pains me to agree with Brain K I do. 
Artificial structure on Red is a sure fire to attract the "junk yard dogs", ya know those little pike that chase anything because they can, and the real trouble happens when they rap your jig and make a couple swings around your plastic weed bed...you now have the equivalent of a underwater hairball.
