5lb or 10lb propane tank...

I want a smaller tank (larger than 1-lb disposable)for ice fishing, but am having a hard time paying $50+ for one.
Does anyone have a used one in good working condition that might be collecting dust?
Shoot me a PM if you have a lead for me on one.

Shouldn't a 10#er be half the price of a 20?

Yeah I bit the bullet awhile back and got myself a 11# tank, the short one, instead of the narrow tall one. I felt the same way never found a deal 
Also if it makes you feel even better, generally they are more expensive to fill from my experince, pound for pound, normally I paid $10+ a fill
May as well give up and buy yourself a snowmobile or a wheeler, tell the wife it's the only logical choice

We were just talking about this at work the other day. A 20# tank is $25 and a 5-10# tank is $50!! They use half the material/metal on the smaller tank but it is twice as much. Whats going on????
I have a 10# tank and i run a Mr. Heater sunflower and the tank will last 5 full days in below zero weather. It happened last year at the end of Feb. when I go on my Winnibigosh trip.

Last December I used 2 1 lb bottles a night, heater and lantern, 3 times a week at least. 6 bottles @$3.50=$21, x4 weeks= $84, thats just one 4 week period. 12 weeks would have cost $252.  Thats not counting being out during the daylight with heat. At the least, 3 months of on the ice, last year I decided to buy the 10 lb tank. Now this year, for 12 weeks of being on the ice it costs me about $35 for that whole time. The tank I use is easy to pull around in the portable shack.

I was dumb and bought an 11# tank (tall one). So now have went back to the old 20#. Since I'm too stubborn to go ahead now and buy an 11# (short).

I agree. I won't pay the price for a 5# tank. I've gotten used to running a long hose off a 20#er outside of the fish house with ability to run both a lantern and heater. The positive aspect is that I don't have to worry about whether every green bottle is empty, almost empty, or darn near empty.

In case your not aware, they sell an adapter at fleet farm that allows you to fill the 1# cylinders from a 20# cylinder yourself. Put the empties in freezer before filling to get maximum capacity. Saves alot of money and weight.

I bought the adapter and the tanks don't last nearly as long as the ones you get from the store. and the adapter was about $20 if I remember. I have one for sale BTW...

When you use an adapter,you have to release the pressure.I use an ice pic with a leather glove on.Screw it back on,and it will fill up

I've looked for quite a while at the 4.25# Camp Mate shorty that Farm & Fleet offers, my problem is that I can't find one that isn't already 2 years old (according to the mfg date stamped on the upper ring). Tanks should be re-certified every 10 years, so I've lost 2 years right off the bat. I've called Worthington (the manufacturer) and they are unable to tell me where fresher stock might be.

Ask the manager if they'll pro-rate the price down to 8
years.

I have a 5 pound tank I bought at Fram & Fleet here in IL. I'm sure your Fleet & Fram have them up there. You might have to order it though. Ask one of the workers there.

That is BS unless they have not received any or shipped any out for 2 years. Do you have a place where you can exchange a empty for a full one? How much does it cost to have it recertified? The bottles for my oxygen and aceteline have to be certified also but since I exchange them all the time I don't worry about when they were, just like my 20# propane tank.

I got lucky and picked up a FREE squatty 11lber last year. It was at Ace Hdwr sitting in the cage. We asked why they were there and he said the gas guy takes them since they had old valves. He gladly gave them to us. We had new valves put in for about $25 and we were ready for the season. It's sitting on my grill now since I ran out while grilling venison steaks the other day.
Check out your local filling station for used bottles, it worked for us!
