Welcome to Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is about a 3 hour drive from my home and this place has some amazing beauty. I was actually on my way through Vang Vieng but I had some time (about 5 hours) to do a little fishing before I had to go. In that short time I surprised myself by catching 3 new lifelisters. I almost can't wait to go back and spend a whole day there.

I found this really cool spot to try fishing where this clear stream dumps into the river. It looked so good.

I caught Lifelister #1 (Poropuntius laoensis) at the mouth of this stream.

A beautiful spot like this holds the most beautiful freshwater fish I have ever seen. This LL #2 of the day: Green Barred Danio. I caught 2 of them on smal pieces of shrimp.

We then moved just up river a bit where we found this beautiful spot.

This is where my Lao buddy Dang caught a couple of cool specimens. One is a Brown Puffer and the other I have yet to ID.

As if anything couldn't be more beautiful, besides my own kids these have to be the most beautiful kids I have seen. Dads are always biased to their own I guess. They always seem curious to see what the big foreigner is up to.

We moved on and found another spot to try. The shape of the mountains here are unique to Asia.

I saw some bigger fish flashing in the riffles so I decided to target them. They happened to be Mahseer. I was so excited to hook up with one. It's not the biggest but what a golden jewel it was.

What a beutiful background! Looks like a beutiful country. Do any of those fish get big enough to eat? Do the people there eat them?

I think it would be easier to compile a list of what they do not eat here. There wouldn't be much on the list.

They do have big fish. You just have to get away from where all the people live to find them. No conservation efforts found here and it shows. You all need to appreciate the wide acceptance of catch and release back home.

Thanks again for sharing. Can you give us a hint on temps there? I would guess warmer than around here as you are in a tee shirt. Those kids sure looked like a happy bunch.
