Great show boys!!! I have heard rumors this bite is still going on as we speak if you are tough enough to brave the elements. Gonna have to give this a shot next fall!

hey boys, Always wanted to try the upper miss. smallie bite. Noticed you were fishin in the G3. I run a 619 ranger, what landing could I use and what strech of river is most fishable from my boat. Thanks in advance and great show .
thanks, cdemeyes (corey)

Yup, the G3 had no issues getting around so your rig will do just fine in MOST areas. Just like any river there's shallow stretches that simply cannot be navigated with a prop boat.
As for suggesting a river access... you'll need to narrow down the stretch of river you want to fish. The Upper Miss is hundreds of river miles long. Steve fishes most all of it from Monticello north all the way past Brainerd. Do you have any area of particular interest where we can narrow down the launch selection?

James, Thanks for your respose! I'ld like to investigate the areas around sartell or brainered. I quess basically where I could fish from my boat. Were you guys in the brainerd area for the show? River looked wide and fairly deep in that area and looks like it's somthing I could handle with my boat. I just curious what area you guys were on and what access you used with your rig in the show? Looked like some fun C&R fishin. Thanks again in advance.

Maybe I missed it the first time thru, but what style/model of jig are you using? Also, when using splitshot what size hook is used and was it a circle? And, were you buying or catching your bait?
That was a fun/educational show to watch.

We were using 1/8 and 1/4 ounce Super Doo jigs.

If you don't need the weedguards just pull them out with a pliers.

2/0 offset worm hooks work great for this presentation.

We were buying it. There just wasn't enough hours in the day to trap or catch 10 - 15 dozen suckers and chubs of that quality.
The minnow bills was a little steep but o' so worth it!

I wished that you would have discussed location more.
you mentioned fishing the down stream side of an island, and some weed lines. but you didn't mention depth or what ever. I would have thought that you would be fishing much deeper holes say like zero to 20 foot of water, but it didn't look like you where fishing very deep at all.
are you just fishing like very small current breaks or a 50 foot section of a current break?

Actually I think we did. In some detail. But maybe this is the best thing about IDO. If you need some follow-up after a show, we're here!
So, allow me to elaborate further...
Sharing a specific depth to look for would have been horribly misleading. And if my memory serves me we caught fish on weeds, rocks, sand and timber. So providing a "look for "X" type of structure really wouldn't get to the heart of the pattern.
I don't think we fished deeper than 8 feet most of the day. We didn't discuss type of structure much because structure type in and of itself was inconsequential. Our primary goal was to find deeper water relative to the surrounding area of river being fished. Once deeper water was found then we further refined the area by looking for a suitable current break providing protection from the current near that deeper water.
If we found deeper water, relative to the surroundings, without a suitable area where the fish could hold out of the current, we didn't find fish. If we found a current break in shallow water, again, the fish were absent.
I know guys would love to hear about a magic combination of rock and sand or some specific "structure type" to look for... but that just is not the key to this pattern. This pattern is all about fishing a river and letting the river dictate where the fish will find suitable habitat at that time of year.
A key point to reiterate is "deeper" is relative. In some areas we could boat for MILES and have a hard time finding water deeper than 3 - 4 feet. In those stretches 6 foot of water was "deep." Find an obstruction of any kind (rock, wood, sand, etc.) providing sufficient shelter associated with that deeper water and we were into fish.
The interesting thing was once we got out on the water and start hitting these areas it became all too apparent how quickly we could eliminate unproductive water. Deep water is typically located in outside turns in the river where current is the strongest and most concentrated and most outside turns offer little in terms of shelter from the current. Find one that does and you're in business.
The area around most islands won't provide much if any depth on the upper miss in the fall as the island are typically comprised of sand with deeper water at the head of the island and strong current and a slowly tapering tail off the island with little to no depth. Find the few that still do provide shelter from the current AND some added depth... and again, you're in business.
I hope that clarifies things.

Here's a list of DNR maps that cover all the pools on the Upper Miss with all the available boat launches. Pick your area of interest and that map will show you what is available.
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/canoeing/mississippiriver/index.html
I hope that helps. I've used those maps myself and have found them to be very useful.

Great show guys! I've generally used B-n-F plastics for smallies, but that lesson with the live bait was awesome. Thank you..

For you anyone that wants a bigger view don't forget to check out that "full screen" option located on the player control.
I can't seem to find the full screen option when I go to watch. Am I not looking in the correct area? Any help would be appreciated.

Great question, Jim.
I've reposted the video and added an image that shows you where to full-screen control is located.
Let me know if that works for you.

Jim, I've recently updated to 7.0 because I was having trouble viewing a lot of videos from numerous sites. I generally use firefox for IDA, mainly because I'll have ebay running on Explorer, but I can run it ok on either one.

We paid full price and this was definitely an example of how you have to pay to play. We burned through $150 in minnows in 6 hours. A guy could trap them or catch them himself but our schedules didn't allow that.

Thanks James and Steve for another very well done show. Three things that really stuck out for me. After catching a nice smallmouth James said, “To the fisherman its (the minnow) was a 75 cent purchase, but too the smallmouth it’s a quarter pounder with cheese”. One of the things a great angler can do is to put themselves into the behaviors of the fish, but you have to name this is a way the angler understands it. The next time I go to a bait store in the fall and get minnow I know I will not ask for a scoop of fatheads, after all why feed them table scraps when they want to fill up!
Sometimes when I am into a hot bite I get so focused on the catching that I may tend to become less respectful of the releasing. I really appreciated the respect and care both anglers put into care and safe return of fish to their natural environment. I know that at times I have been a bit careless in my fish release looking more at the next cast. Thanks for showing me that it’s cool to take your time; make a careful release. The fish are still there so you don’t have to do the quick flip and flop release.
From day one I have felt that I.D.A. not only provides the best information, but the focus has been on angling ethics with high regards for both personal and environmental respect. This week’s episode was great to watch, I learned a great deal and look ahead to applying these skills on the water! Great work.
