I've been itching to do some ice fishing for lake trout since I heard about it from a coworker way back in the day. He used to winter camp with buddies up in the BWCA and do some sledding with their dogs.

Now there's is a lake by my sister's cabin that contains lakers, so I am trying to get the brothers to go up there for an extended weekend this summer. The info from the show will really help us out and give us a jumping off point.

The real bummer here is we have to wait until March for the laker season to open. I'm thinking Lake Nipigon for a laker trip this year. That lake gives up an occassional 30 - 40 lb laker which would be completely over the top.

Hey James I know a certain person who has Nipigon coordinates for a rock bar that tops out at 25'. It has 100'-200' depth all around it with a large "cut" to the west of it that has two good size rivers dumping into it about 7 miles from the cut and after ice out has produced my personal best 33# laker and I have seen camp fish just under 50#. I wouldnt suggest taking your snoopy rod for this place. There are a few nice Pike bays nearby and walleye. The bait fish stack up in this area in the spring, the 33# laker I caught had a 18" sucker in its gullet. I could see the tail as I was pulling out my lure. We have caught numerous 20# lakers and when we keep one they are just looaded with smelt. I believe the record is 45 smelt in one laker. Drop me a PM for more info

I'm not sure that fish would fit through a 10" ice hole.

Speaking of which... how in the heck DOES one land a 40+ lb laker through a hole punched by an ice auger? I just don't see how a fish that big and deep would fit.

Although it would be fun trying.

If this Nipigon trip does become a reality I will be sure to give you a holler for more info. That is one enormous lake!

I actually hooked a big laker on walleye gear while we were filming this show. Each evening we'd pull up onto deep rock points and catch a few walleyes as the sun went down. Well, wouldn't you know it, I stick a BIG laker on walleye tackle and without going into the gory details of how this laker and I parted ways prematurely let's just say a walleye weight ice rod is a BAD choice.

The rod I used is a Thorne Bros custom designed specifically for fishing lakers. I went with the 24256 - 42" Ice Rod and it fished great but I can see the need to add an even heavier rod if Nipigon becomes a reality.

How are you fishing those lakers in the summer? All trolling?

Dipsy divers and straight line trolling, you can only have 1 line per man up there so I like to get the bait away from the boat by adjusting the dipsy 1 left, 1 right and throw a straight line deep diver off the back if we have a third guy with us. J plugs have been very good to us recently but Nipigon is a very good spoon lake also, I have wanted to vertical jig them but we always did good trolling plus its a nice diversion for us from casting our arms off for pike and handling alot of pike. For the most part once we are set up its sit back and wait for the action, maybe changing lures if something is hot, we take turns per fish no matter who's rod because alot of times it can be that one magic lure. Nipigon has its own special regs- like it is completely barbless and the walleye does not open until the second weekend in June so depending on when we go walleye might not even be part of our itinerary, also Nipigon is a world class brook trout fishery.

That would get a little dicey in winter (I have never done it). I would have to make arrangements with Brian King. He runs Kings landing in the summer, but the cabins are a little shall we say, um, well "rustic" would be a good word. I am sure Brian would rent us his house on the reservation or we could use his trailer down at the access point but we would probably need sleds to get down there and a good source of heat I dont think anyone plows the road down to the access (this would be the best option in my opinion), I know some guy's he has done that for before. I would have to talk with him. Most of Nipigon is very limited in access, it is virtual all wilderness, no houses. The reservation is 2.5 hours north on Thunder Bay up 527 and right on the lake no towns near by. I also know a guy who just opened a resort hotel within 20 miles of the res but we would still need Brian for access to that part of the lake if he is open in winter. I have spent many family vacations up there and fishing trips with buddy's so I am in pretty good with Brian plus he likes making money. Your only other options would be going up the east side of the lake. There is a town (Nipigon) on the lake over there and one resort way up in the northeast corner called Onaman resort that runs winter packages but I have zero knowledge of that part of the lake or the resort. There only about 6 access points on the entire lake so you are very limited, it would be tough getting in and out of the wilderness access points. Brians access is his, he has always taken good care of us and the people on the res respect him. One other thing with Nipigon regs: Only artificial lures allowed, no meat of any sort (I am guessing this is right up your ally)

Let us know how your laker bite goes this winter. I LOVE those fish and would be very interested in hear about laker bites on various bodies of water.

Lake Simcoe has a health stock of fish. Generally the Lake Trout and Whitefish are stiocked into the lake. A put and take fishery.

Each year the MNR stocks 140,000 whitefish and 100,000 lakers into the lake.

Hey, nice looking fish!!! I am a little jealous we don't have those brutes down here in Iowa. Canada is a bit of a drive, but looks like it might be worth it. Great episode!!
