Great show as always, guys!!!
One think I noticed that I wanted to ask... James, you talked about the importance of the spring bobber rods. Those St Croix Legends are awesome for crappies. I did notice, however, that about the time you downsized for the mid-day bite, you ditched the Spring bobber rod for what looked like the St Croix premier without a spring bobber. Just curious why you would adjust to that. Personally, my thoughts are that the mid day bite is the most difficult and usually requires more finesse and greater attention to the spring bobber and the MarCum. My only guess would be that with the smaller presentation, maybe a more active jigging technique was being called for. Scott appeared to stick with the spring bobber, but you both appeared to do well.
So, just curious as to why you switched up... was there something impaticular that the fish were looking for that you couldn't obtain with the spring bobber?

Hi Dave
I didn't have much of a say in that switch. A pair of larger pike made that switch for me.
I hooked a couple rockets that ran off a bunch of line on my spring bobber rods before walking off with a couple spoons. As it was DANG cold I certainly wasn't all that excited about re-spooling rods to get the Legend ice rods back in action so I grab a couple of my medium light rods and attempted to get back in the game. From that point on Scott basically kicked my butt and all but stole the show.
Great observation, Dave.

That makes perfect sense. I had thought of that possibility too... but in 30 some feet of water, I thought that was less likely and also didn't want to assume. Great slabs!!!

We ran into a small number of walleyes out there in that deep water as well and when the sun popped out you really never knew what you were going to catch... crappie, perch, walleye or Mr. Toothie. I really enjoy that type of trip where you need to drive in on sleds versus driving out on the ice with a truck. The seclusion and lack of fishing pressure definitely adds to the experience.

James, I noticed that the trebles were tipped with what looked like an artificial grub. Or maybe it was just so cold that they looked artificial. Can you comment on an appropriate bait to tip with and the number of baits that you and Scott would use?

Although Scott and I primarily stuck with frozen shiners, tipping the spoons with just the head, throughout the day Scott and I did some experimenting with artificials going through a number of different baits with the fish show a strong preference for baits in white and pink colors. The body shape didn't seem to play a large role in putting fish on the ice. As far as size goes, all artificials were kept very small in the 1 - 1.5 inch range.
Interestingly those same plastics fished on a plain jig did not perform well at all. And the same held true for a shiner fished on a jig. I think we caught a few smallish perch and not much else when we went with the standard leadhead jig and plastic or shiner. When the plastics and minnow heads were combined with the small Demon jigging spoon the fish responded in a much more favorable manner with the glow demon spoon with the pink head really putting a hurt on the slabs.
I attached a photo of that spoon for reference.

Great questions guys, thanks for asking them.

James & Scott, I was able to enjoy this episode again from the hotel in Garrison this morning. Overlooking the partially frozen pond, this seemed very appropriate. A great tutorial and great slabs cheers

Both Scott and I appreciate you taking the time to tuning in!
The big lake just can't freeze fast enough, can it?! I think The Red Door was reporting boats out fishing muskie on the north end just prior to the holiday so it has a ways to go yet.

Great show guys! This will be my first year on the ice and i've learned much from the episodes! thanks again for the great show!
I do have a question...and i think it might be a little off topic...but those st croix spring bober rods... can they handle the heavier jigs for walleyes, say the 1/4 oz range?

This is a great question... certainly not off topic in the least.
In my opinion 1/4 ounce is beyond the upper limits of what the spring bobbers can handle. 1/8 is not an issue. Actually 1/8 ounce lures work very well with the heaviest spring offered by St. Croix. I rarely fish a lure over 1/8 ounce so I've never tried it but my gut tells me that 1/4 ounce is going to bottom out the spring and render it all but useless to you.
If we're lucky maybe someone that has tried a 1/4 ounce lure with the heaviest springs will chime in here and share their thoughts on it.
Enjoy your first year out there on the ice. There's nothing better than getting set up on a carefully chosen piece of structure right before prime time and settling down in the hopes of icing a handful of big walleyes as the sun sets. Even better if it is snowing and blowing as it adds some "texture" to the experience!

Thanks james for the great response. I guess i'll have to learn to use the small stuff. I'm a big jig open water guy...anything less than 1/4 is unimaginble lol. anyways that was the answer i was looking for! Thanks again.

I have tried 1/4 oz on my Med-Heavy St Croix Legend Spring bobber rod... as James said, it was all but useless. I prefer using a lighter action rod... Medium to Medium-Heavy maybe... and watching the tip. most fish that are going to hit a 1/4... you will see it at the rod tip. Just like the spring bobber, have to pay attention. I use the St Croix Premier for those cases.

You and me both. I'm on the ice every day next week... except for Wednesday. First out in South Dakota chasing sumo perch and then I'll be headed down to fish in PDC with Koonce and Clark. And then that following weekend I think I'll be up near Longville.
See ya' on the ice.

What do I need to do to setup my Lowrance 522c to use out of my boat and on the ice? Are you hooking it up to a sonar or are you just using the GPS & mapping features?

I'm only using the GPS and mapping features of my Lowrance. My LX5 does the fish finding.
What I did was mount my 112 to a flasher box. A blue Genz box would work great as it holds the needed battery in the back and allow you to mount the bracket to hold the GPS unit on the front.
Here's a link to the Genz Box. >>> Genz Box Link
The final piece is mounting the GPS puck. Ram makes a simple adapter plate that works well.
Basically the GPS puck antennae mounts to the round end and I bolted the rectangle end to the back of my box.

Holler if you have any further questions.

Awesome show james and scott, Now you just need a red head like me to round out the team. Just picked up a new st. croix yesterday and im pumped to get out and try it. Just curious, which rod and spring bobber combo were you using for those crappies? I bought a light action, but I realized they seem quite a bit stronger than most other light action rods, and im thinking about buying a medium spring cause it seemed with that demon spoon your spring was getting weighed down pretty good even being pushed all the way into the grommet. I look forward to some more great shows.

Hi Red
I was using a Light Legend Ice rod and a medium spring. It worked well but you're correct about the weight of the spoon we used pushing the spring bobber to its max carrying capacity. Anything heavier and I would have needed to go to the heavy weight spring.
