I've never seen an ice rod that long. Can you use them with a reel?
Pete Bauer
I would guess not because they do not have eyelits and use a 'line though blank' system

As usual, great episode James

The rods have a built in reel...As mentioned above...they have a hollow blank and the built in reel feeds the line thru the blank. The reel has a 1 to 1 ratio and the only drag system would be the ability to thumb the reel..

It really is not set up to use it that way but I have been forced to be real creative at times when a big bass or a nasty ol dogfish takes my jig ans runs

When your hole hoping in ,,,,lets say under 10' of water MAX..they really shine, and are a blast to battle panfish under the ice..

Great episode fellas!

With out a doubt my favorite style of fishing!
Ya get a heavy fish on and those Pulsator rods bend over like Palm tree in the northwest eye wall of hurricane. Maybe not as glamorous as pulling 26" marble eyes with a St.Croix but a ton of fun.

For those coming to the GTG in Prairie on the 24th - I'm sure you'll see a Pulsator or two in action. Just about every local carries one now-a-days....

Cuz that's what the Bos says..........

That little ice hole on the video is one i grew up ice fishing. Dad and I actually have a place in town, been going there since I was a kid. Great place to hit the ice. LONG walk. I usually stay for the day though. Didn't see much for fish size on the video, where they down there on camera??

We had just come into a real high pressure system come in over night...The bigger fish had moved out...some of them anyways...Actually I was suprised we did as good as we did...

Dave:

Yes, it looked really cold the day you were filming in there. Are you still doing any guiding that way? I believe my dad went out with you a few years back. Mark Hanson from West Union. Anyway, I'd like to share some stories about that hole sometime, give me a shout.

Are you coming over for the GTG here ? We sure could meet up then !!!

Otherwise give me a shout when your over this way !!

I will look you up if I make it over there. It's going to have to warm up before I make a 2 1/2 hour drive to ice fish. I've only been out 2 times this winter which for me is unusual. I'll give you shout when I'm in the area.

Nice show guys!!

Dave,
Previously I used the rod set-up you had. Shorter version I bought from Gander. Loved the spring bobber, but got frustrated with them freezing up inside the shaft. I mostly used them in 6-8 feet of water. One thing I did differently though was reel in the fish every time. My assumtion was that I was collecting water in the shaft and it would freeze over time. Loved the line through the spring bobber, but the reel and freezing led me away from that type of rod.

When you say you fish this rod in 10 feet of water or less, do you still not reel in line with it even closer to the 10 foot mark? Any tips to help limit ice build up?

Hey Ted
I haven't seen you since Stoddard and a hand full of Lil Cecils

When I fish the deepest water I will lift my rod as high as I can and then grab the line to pull in the fish...10' is really stretching it and I do not do this real often at all...But I NEVER reel in the fish no matter what....and when I do have to reel in to put the rod away I will pinch the line at the spring bobber to squeegee the water off the line as it goes into the rod blank...

I hope this helps !!

Great show guys. Do you normally not tip those Cecils? I cannot get anything to go on them unless I add a spike or two.
ecnookAdministrator
Never ?
Well I can not say never...1% of the time I would guess...that time in the middle of the day when nothing is happening...I have done it then...

Otherwise...NOPE !! I do not tip the lil cecils with anything

Bummer. I fish outside 99% of the time and not having to kneel on the ice to fish sound nice. I wonder if a guy could add eyes and a reel seat to one of those blanks to fish deeper water with a regular reel? Anyone tried that?

Hey Dave? what is the best way to go about purchasing a pulsator rod? Isn't that a locally made rod or is that something I could purchase at a store? online? let me know and oh yeah how much do they run?

Been using long rods for about 15 years in fact been building them for about 15 years. The only way to ice fish. I had alot of people laugh at me when I walked on the ice with the first one, but, guess how many of those guys and gals are using them now. Gotta love it!!!

He who laughs last! I really enjoy fishing that way. I just wish I knew of more ultra-shallow fishing opportunities away from the river where I could use them more often.

Thanks for those by the way...

Good points on the poles. I might have to venture back into the game again!!

Hope to see you on the ice sometime...Ted

nice show again.
another option to the long rod shown, is to use a section of an old fly rod. Set it with a 4" reel and spring bobber.
