Great show James and Chris! Something I don't think I have seen on a pike fishing show before: 1) Using spinning gear and 2) that many nice sized pike in one shot of filming.

Hey DD,
Customers really enjoy zinging and slinging with Spinning gear. You can still effectively fight and release the fish healthy, and it is a flat out blast!! 10-20 lb pike put lightning bolts through a Med-Med Light St. Croix!! Can't wait to get on them this spring!! Until then I guess we'll just slide big walleyes out 8 inch holes in our t-shirts

Those pike were a hoot! I'm hoping to get back up there to try my hand at ice out pike on plastics. Some of the smaller Dunwright baits should work well and there's endless bays to explore.
If you can get it on your calendar... you'll never regret making the trip!

I'd like to see what those pike would have done if the conditions had actually been "right" that day. A cold, overcast and rainy day is NOT what you want for those fish and they still bit like heck for 3 - 4 hours. Had it been warm and sunny... I think it would have been much, much better.
As for those spinning rods... that's the only way to go. If the weight of the baits allows an angler to use a spinning rod I say go for it! We certainly didn't have any issues landing those fish quickly and without adding any undue stress to the fish.
Chris' pink line might have been a bit over the top for me though.

James turned me onto Tyger wire!! THAT WILL BE ALL I USE FOR LEADERS HERE OUT!! Awesome!! Comes in a spool, and you can cut to your desired length. Very flexible, no memory, and hey we landed 28 pike in the shoot, and neither one of us had to replace leaders!! That speaks for itself. I've used all other types of leaders, and basically had problems from clasps popping to major memory kinks... They are tops in my book!! IN FACT... Thinking about that I think I am going to get myself some more getting ready for this years PIKE SLAM!!

Here is a history Ice out history!! Hope this helps!! Ice out is considered when one can navigate clearly to Kettle falls. 1990 April 29 1991 April 27 1992 May 7 1993 April 30 1994 May 8 1995 May 2 1996 May 18 1997 May 5 1998 April 13 1999 May 1 2000 April 22 2001 May 1 2002 May 4 2003 May 5 2004 May 1 2005 April 23 2006 April 16 2007 May 7 2008 May 14
Oftent times I'm popping pike with a big sheet of ice on the main lake. For my customers that book Pike trips we try to give it our best guess!! Then when we get close I will do everything possible to allow movements early or late depending on what Ma Nature deals us!! We have less ice than last year due to the Snow Blanket. Good solid ice, but not the extreme thickness as some years, so I think..... That should help!! Cool with me!! Pardon the pun!! LOL!!

Yup, tyger wire is the ticket for leader material when you want to have a tooth-proof leader that doesn't impede the action on smaller baits.

We used 15# wire and tied our own 8" - 12" leaders in front of the Bombers we fished.

10/2 powerpro? Wow. I would of guess much heavier line. You must of got some pretty good runs out of those fish with that set up.

I went with a 7"6' MH St. Croix Tournament with 6/14 fireline. It was more than enough rod with 'umff to spare.

As a Guide I focused my efforts on the smaller pike, and let James wrestle with the "Big Girls" If you believe that... NO in all honesty a Med-flex St.Croix Rod would have been ideal in my mind. The 7 6' James used definately gives more snap with the extra length allowing longer bombs being thrown out to cover more water. You can bet these fish put lightning bolts through the fishing rods when they smashed our presentations. There was no "Hey James I think.... I'm not quite sure if... Is that something..." Nope it was "FISH!!!" "FISH FISH FISH!!!!" Great times!! Great times!! Oh and FYI that 10/2 Powerpro is more than enough. SUPER SMOOTH CASTING, and with the TYGER leaders zero break-offs, and no kinked leaders after 1 fish!! I know there is a time and place for heavier equipment, but in this situation this was a great set-up!! AND FUN FUN FUN!! And This year I'll probably spool more lucky PINK line again!! BUT I've got a new little twist to the presentation for fooling the biggest and baddest Rainy Lake has to offer!!

Sure looks like a Great time in shallow bays for some real quality Pike. It has been a very long time since I've had a numbers day on Pike. A Spring trip this year is sure sounding like a possibility. Great Show, Thanks, Jack

James said he had a tally of 28 pike caught. We didn't have ideal conditions as it was cloudy with a little breeze. If we would have had some sunshine it would have been even better believe it or not. As you know those days that increase the water temps back in the right mud bottom bays really have the fish fired up. Big Pike like that are a blast. I think we only caught one or two 3lb fish. Most everything was big. I think James and I were both a little suprised we didn't hook into a 20lb + fish, but hey there is always next year!! I've got to stop talking about it or I'm going to have to watch the show again!!
