All I can say is that kicks some major

I've gotta give that a try

Who would've know that growing up as a little boy I lived next door to a gold mine
Lawrence Ecklor
Boy that brought back some serious memories... we fished them every A ugust in the 80s up at Port Washington

Guys

I can say, without reservation, this was the most fun I had fishing in 2008. Light tackle. Jerkbaits. And big salmon that would hit and strip off a 100' of line so fast you hardly had time to react. And the stamina on these fish is something you have to experience to believe. I had one fight with one of my larger fish that lasted over 20 minutes. In the end I won the battle but I was completely wore out and MORE than ready to concede at the point that fish made it to the bottom of the beckman. I'm not going to even talk about the fish that hit, went into fighter pilot mode, and before I could say "what's going on" that fish took every last inch of line and left me standing their shaking my head.

If you take one extended fishing trip this year... this is the one. Give Eric a shout.

Clown Suspending Rogues took the most fish. We also caught fish on a couple other patterns but clown was the bets producer if memory serves me.

What type of lines were you guys using? Must be good line to put up with that beating

--------------------
Hard or soft, I'll fish em both!
James HolstAdministrator
Both Eric and I were using braided line. I believe we both were spooled with 6/14 fireline. At that pound test we could handle the fish we just had to have a lot of it on the reel for those times when one of the big kings would hit the afterburners and try to spool us.

It is a pretty crazy feeling to hook into one of these fish and have them go off in a straight line and there's nothing, ab-so-lute-ly NOTHING, you can do to stop them until they decide to head off in a different direction.

Hook up and HOLD ON!

That video brought back some fond memories of early fall fishing along Milwaukee, Kenosha, and Port Washington several years ago.
This great opportunity exists along much of the eastern Wisconsin shoreline all the way north to my neck of the woods. Eric and James, thanks for surely warming up a cold Feb day. Like I always say; its almost as good as being there with you!
It also shows the great versatility of the St. Croix 68MXF...fromm Walleye to Kings!

All I can say is, WOW! Saw this on FSN this morning and it just made my cabin fever worse! Out of curiosity, is fall the only time of year you can find 'em in the shallows with that technique?

I'm definitely e-mailing Ken to see if I can get a slot booked for doing this next fall after my Minnesota trip!

I catch Kings from July through October on Baitcaster's and spinning tackle with jigs and plastics, cranks, jigging spoons and even live bait. It's all based on the water temps in summer. Lots of fun and I had a fantastic time fishing with James! Thanks for having me as a guest!

Thanks again for sharing this pattern with all of us here at In-Depth. It was definitely an eye opener to say the least. Now I just need to find a way to get out there when those kings are hitting jigs and plastics. I'm pretty sure I'd feel like I died and went to heaven.

James,

It looked like you were fishing fairly shallow water. So would you say that those fish would be accessible with a fly rod? I'm thinking big streamers, sink tip line, flourocarbon leader, and 200 yards of backing.

If you listen close to the video you can hear that "zzzzzzzzzzzz" sound of a drag spinning at warp speed. How cool is that?

Also....does the harbor have to have a river dumping into it? It sounded like Eric said that they stock some fish in the harbor wheterh or not there was a river there too.

Thanks

No river dumps into the area we fished, on a fly rod?? Maybe??

FYI all the harbors from Kenosha all the way to the Menomonee river have salmon in them, harbors such Two rivers, Sheyboygan, Port Washinton, Milwaukee and Racine seem to be some of the best ports to try this in.

They all have lots of fish in them. Best of Luck!

I can't imagine doing that all day, then having to do it again. I am not sure of I would even be able to make a cast. Cool Show.

do you need any special tags for this or anything or does a regular WI fishing license work?

Another amazing show. You guys keep doing it better every episode. You mentioned fluorocarbon leaders how long of a leader were you using? Also I heard a lot of whining coming from James about his arm hurting. All I can say is shut up and fish.

Yeah, I hear ya'. Nobody likes a whiner and it isn't like I should expect much sympathy given the cause.

Excellent show James!!.. I only wish I had more time.. what's that old saying..so many fish..so little time.. ..

One of these days I might just drag my boat up there...seems pretty calm fishing so I wouldn't think I'd have to worry about boat size. Again great show..

You'll need a great lakes trout stamp in addition to the regular WI license. Best $10 you'll ever spend.
