great show James and Eric

My six year old, Jonathan, noticed that that there was a bobber between the rod eyes when you were using those slammers, can you explain why?

Thanks,
Ron

Tell Jonathan he's got some keen eyes! The bobber is there on the line between the guides to act as a bite indicator. Notice during the setup of the Automatic Fisherman that we set the bait where we wanted it then pulled some extra line out to allow that bobber to drop towards the ice. When a fish hits and begins to move with that bait that bobber would slowly start to rise back toward the rod blank giving the anglers a visual clue that we needed to start heading towards the hole. Talk about a VERY-VERY sensitive strike indicator! But it is needed given how picky the trout can be.

There's more than a few lessons to be learned from this episode for anyone that fishes tip ups and has grown tired of missing fish due to the fish dropping the bait after the hit. Note: The Automatic Fisherman isn't legal in MN. If they were I'd be adding them to my arsenal as these "slammers" were a better mousetrap.

The browns fight with brute force and the steelies are sprint champs. Eric definitely put us on some incredible fish.

At least your moon walk got cut! Just kidding. Eric's dance instruction was short lived and it made the final cut because, hey, we're out there having FUN. If I was you I'd blame it on catching a big steelhead. Those fish make grown men act... weird. But in a good way.

How's your bite been of late? Getting into those massive browns yet?

Excellent show guys! Eric, I am sure I will see you down there this winter. Can't wait!!!
James HolstAdministrator
Andy, didn't you get a brown that was pushing 20# through the ice last winter? Or was that open water? Either way that is one huge fish.

James, It was through the ice last winter. I will never forget the challenge of getting that fish up a 8" hole.
