Good job on the show guys! Man that pike was a tanker. Great tip up tips! Going to dust off and re-tie those tip ups. Have not got a lot of use the last few years.

Nothing like a 46" pike to close out a day on the ice.

Awesome Guys!! That big pike really got my blood flowing! I'll have to get some tips on keeping all your digits when bringing them up those toothy tankers. Great show men!! Also want to comment on the Lakemaster segments which have been done. Very informative, and great visuals for anglers. IMO......Great add to the show!!

Joel if you don't mind I have a couple questions in regards to your flagging pike. As you know we do our share here also, and I never pass up the chance to learn others tactics. Was there a size preference on the sucker minnows utilized?? Did you guys cut fins on the suckers?? Lastly it looks as though on that beast you were utilizing a double treble set up (True Quick Set Rig) we like to utilize also. Do you by chance remember the size trebles utilized along with the strategic hook positioning? I know your memory was probably frozen after that trip, but just interested in even more information!!

Great job!! BTW I don't know how you held yourself back from tackling that big pike when it nosed up!! I just about came through the screen after it!!

Here's a supplemental video we put out on rigging tipups, etc., that was done with Joel and Jonny P. after they iced that gigantor pike.

The name of the company that makes those treble hook rigs is called Big Tooth Tackle. You'll find their contact info and pics of their rigs if you follow the link above.

Thanks for the compliments all, and thanks Chris too for the great question. You're right too about tackling that pike, we've all seen too many good fish slide backwards from where they came!

Jon is the true expert on the pike rigging and tip-up work. I've learned quite a bit from him and others here, and with those true tankers, we fished massive suckers. I'm talking about the biggest ones we could get our hands on. Good walleyes will tackle a bigger sucker than most anglers would think, so in selecting the 1lb plus suckers, you get away from walleyes tripping your flags unless they're a truly quality fish. We did not cut fins on those suckers from what I remember, and we let those big baits dangle in free space. Fishing in 10-12FOW on Red really makes it easier for those fish to find your offering when placing the sucker halfway between the bottom of the ice and the lake bottom.

Another thing I was going to mention is the way Jon played that fish. Firm tension to absorb the massive head-shakes along with plenty of give and "slip" to allow that fish to run when he needed to. You also need to pay attention to how you lay out your slack line, and that you have plenty of it to allow that fish to run.
