Lake Osakis Fall Fishing Report 10.17.2009

Finally!!!!!

That is the best way to describe this fall fishing report on Lake Osakis. With numerous trips to Mille Lacs already this fall I felt it was time to try the same technique just on a different lake. I was given an opportunity to fish tonight with the man who taught me everything about fishing as a kid……a chance to re-kindle those memories. Tonight my dad was taking me fishing! With the busy lifestyles we all face sometimes these opportunities don’t come very often. Even if a fish is not boated, these trips are still added to the memory bank. However tonight trip is something I will remember for a very long time.


My PB trolling on Osakis
We got on the lake a little early to do some scouting. We were looking at water temp, looking for some baitfish, and of course looking at how “green” the weeds were. The water temp was a perfect 47 degrees; the weeds have started to die off, and also trying to locate the schools of panfish/baitfish. We targeted a weed line that had all 3 factors present. Presentation was Smithwick Rattlin Rouges trolled about 80-85 feet behind the boat at 1.7-1.9 mph. Color didn’t seem to matter as long as it had red eyes, and an orange belly.

As we trolled along this weed edge it was very important to keep the inside rod right on the edge of the weeds in about 7 feet of water, sometimes even ripping the crank through the weeds. This allowed the outside rod to be trolled over 9-10 fow. This precise boat control was key in keeping both lures in the zone as we “S” turned up and down the weed edge. As we trolled we noticed a significant underwater weed point that stuck out on the Lakemaster chip. Little did we know that all of our fish would come within 50 yards of this “point”. Each time we made a pass over that underwater point we got bit. I think the walleyes were pinning those panfish up against this weed point but, as we trolled by they chose they rattlin rouge instead.

We both ended up catching personal best fish tonight for this body of water, we also got to put aside our life for a few short hours and fish as father/son again, just like I remember it as a kid…..Once again thanks dad for taking me fishing!

Congrats Cal!!! Your dad's fish is gorgeous. I can tell you're pumped up... anyone that makes a fishing report at 12:30 AM is still a little wired. Osakis has been good to you since last winter when you got into those mongo gills and crappies. Will there be a return trip in your near future?

I think I told my dad 4 times tonight.....we have to try this spot this winter for gills, these walleyes are in here feeding on them...they have to be...

I am wired a little....I had a great time fishing tonight...

Thanks for sharing it with us. Trust me... I can "feel" your energy through your report and I must admit suddenly I have the urge to be in a boat on a dark lake, hummm-mm--mmm of a T8 in my left ear and a Tidemaster in my right hand waiting for that Ka-RUNCH of a big walleye hitting a stickbait. Were the fish really hammering the baits?

That 29 my dad caught, when it hit I think I heard either the clicker engage on the line counter or the St. Croix hit the motor. During the whole fight, he kept saying no way this can be a walleye....its peeling too much drag....little did we know it was this sumo....
These fish were classic fall walleye hitting a crank bait....seek and destroy method....

It must have been a good night. We had excellent luck as well, but we didn't have any 29"ers ! Gotta love when a game plan comes together like that. Very cool and great report!
