Trust me James and I had a great time filming that show!! It was very exciting being able to give the monsters we see on a daily basis up here a little TV TIME!! Rainy has been fishing under the radar for many years as our marketing campaign isn't very aggressive, and tends to get overshadowed versus competitive tourist attractions. That is good and bad, and some locals would rather keep it that way. Personally I love to show the magnificent body of water we have in our frontyard, and love being able to introduce anglers to a lifetime of awesome fishing. Not only do I think this is one of the top fisheries in the world, but arguably the most picturesque!! 220,000 acres of water and 2500 pine studded islands. Whether it be the winter, spring, summer or fall the fishing here is awesome!! In all honesty it is tough to pick a favorite species or favorite time of year, but putting the hammer down on monster walleyes through a 8 inch hole is really incredible. Then plucking 10-25 pike in the spring is pretty fun. With that being said popping 13-15 inch slabs during the spawn is lights out, but how can you beat TOAD smallmouths on topwater!! Oh heck with it maybe I'll swing down the the Rainy River and lay into a few 50lb Sturgeon and get my minds straight!! When you stop and think about the action we had considering mobility wasn't much of an option due to 25 below temperatures really shows how being "Spot On" is so incredibly important!! What wasn't shown on that film was the fact that James and I lost at least 4 other monster walleyes (Surely one of those went 30!!). When you know your reeling up a 26+ it stings a little to lose them. Glad everyone is enjoying the video, and look forward to sharing this fishery with IDO members in the near future!! For all those getting a little cabin fever next weeks IDO episode is not going to help!! We have a lot of awesome ice fishing from here on out, and remember we fish walleyes into April!! Well better sign off we've got more monsters to ice!! Haven't landed a 30+ yet this new year!!

WOW!

What else can be said?!

-26 and Chris is running around without a jacket on? What would your Mother say?
The steam filling the Otter was pretty neat and really illustrated the temps up there.

I'm going to tell you guys...I was disappointed in that first trophy walleye. The way you had to fight to get it to the hole...I was sure it was going to be a 14 pound eelpout. Maybe next year.

Great show and instruction on how and where to get on those piggies. Chris, how long will this type of bite last?

Very nice fish and great show James.
Watched the show twice. Could you give us a little more detail on what sort of presentation worked best with the Lightning Spoons. In the past, I've used a quick snap letting the spoon flutter back down, but wondered if more subtle twitching may do the trick at times

Chris Granrud
Hi HIB,

I'll let James give his response also, but I've found getting the fish to chase to about 5 feet off the bottom immediately stacks the deck in your favor. Most the walleyes that are coming from the bottom would rather stay there, and are only moving up to feed. Thus when they rise it makes the fish make a decision. More often than not that will be to inhale that spoon. On days in which the fish are not as aggressive or maybe in a nuetral mood I'd suggest twitch and sit, or even a shaking of the spoon. Remember as you shake the spoon the minnow head is fluttering back and forth and can be too much for the fish to handle. Lastly I turned a few fish pounding the bottom and then slowly and steadily rising the bait up the water column. Lots of different ways to fish these Lightning spoons, but those are some of my favorite. Yesterday I caught a 25.5 inch walleye 3 feet below the ice in 39 f.o.w. Obviously chasing suspended baitfish, so when I got to her in a HURRY I jigged it very aggressively and darted it away like a fast moving smelt or ciscoe. That is all it took, and literally after the hook set I saw a the white spot on her tail!! Hope this helps!!

As much as possible I try to present to each fish individually. Once you've had some time staring at your flasher you get real good at picking up how aggressive the fish is by the way it moves. Here's some generals that I tend to stick to...

A fish coming in 1 - 3 foot above the bottom is typically much more aggressive than the fish that coming in right on the bottom. When I see those marks I tend to put my spoon 6" above their nose and give a couple 4" - 6" snaps to my jigging spoon, followed by a pause. During the pause I'm waiting for a reaction. If I can get that fish to start rising up towards the spoon I'll start to slowly pull that spoon up and away from the fish while continuing to impart those 4" - 6" snaps to my spoon. If the fish keeps rising I keep the spoon moving upward. In this scenario the fish almost always hit. And hit hard.

Fish that come in right on the bottom tend to be less aggressive and often need to be coaxed a little more. When I see that fish come in belly to the bottom I'll put the spoon just above the fishes' head and give small "wiggles" to the spoon while watching intently for a reaction. If the fish comes up fast and committed then I'll fall into the pattern I described above for more aggressive fish. More often than not those bottom huggers come up to the spoon slowly and won't move far. In that scenario I'll concentrate on imparting very minimal jigging motions and again I'll wait for a response from the fish. If I can get that fish to come up off the bottom very often I'll stop jigging my spoon and slowly, and I mean SLOWLY, raise my rod tip. The goal is to get that fish to come up with the spoon. One quick movement or overly aggressive jigging motion and that fish will be gone! At times I'll spend several minutes playing this slow game of cat and mouse to get a hit. Very often what happens is these less aggressive fish will gradually become more and more aggressive as long as you don't scare them off. The key to getting this type of fish to hit is to get it to come off the bottom 6" to inspect that slowly moving spoon before it drops away. When it drops away drop that spoon back down to where you first started working the fish and give the spoon a couple small snaps... just a couple inches. Wait for that fish to come back in for a second look. Then slowly raise your rod tip. Some times small twitches to the spoon will help maintain the fish's interest. The goal is to get that fish to come up off the bottom a little higher this time... maybe 9". Then 12". Often if the fish is going to eventually hit you'll notice the fish gets a little more aggressive and will rise a little higher in the water column to follow the spoon. Eventually that fish will hit... if you play the game right.

As for suspended fish, those that ride well above the bottom... they're a whole different breed. Some times they're so danged aggressive all you need to do is get the spoon above their heads. And then the next time you reel up to a suspended fish it will bolt from the screen like you tried to drop a lawn chair on its head.

I hope this helps. The short of it is every fish needs to be fished individually and the key is being comfortable with your flasher as a good flasher can communicate a tremendous amount of information that will aid an angler in upping their catch rates more than just about any other tool they could possibly have on the ice.

Great description on jigging techniques there. That is exactly how I fish walleyes here. The biggest thing is to give them what they want. Something he may not have mentioned is that a lot of times very aggressive fish will reject a non-moving bait. Don't know why but sometimes you need to raise your bait fast to get them.

That is one outstanding video.
And the discussion as well, very descriptive explanation of your technique. THANKS

I love Rainy! Fished it a bunch in the summer months but never when she's iced up. That will have to change. It is hard to believe that the fishing pressure is as light as it is. I suppose 26 below has a little something to do with that. Anyway, thanks for great show after great show. I watch em over and over and have learned a ton. Thanks for introducing me to Custom Jigs and Spins, James. I have made the necessary investment and am enjoying the spoils. They've got great stuff. Keep jackin' jaws!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you're able to catch the shows on TV as well. (Makes the walleyes look even bigger... )

As for the lack of pressure on Rainy the entire time we fished for this show we never heard an auger that wasn't ours, a generator, snowmobile or vehicle. Solitude is a GREAT thing when the fish are biting.

It looks like the fishing up there is a lot better then down here in Wabasha. Chris nice work on the video with James. I had to watch it about 6 times wondering why you looked so familiar. You guys should do about 10 more shows like this one, they are fun to watch.

Hey Buddy!!

Welcome to IDO!! We've got a great group of River fisherman on here, and only a few crazy guys up here on the border!! Glad to see you join up!! Could use some more posts down there chasing those winter backwater fish!!

Glad you enjoyed the show!! I know we sure had a fun time filming it. I think we had 4 other big fish on that didn't that were camera shy, but hey thats the way it goes. Yesterday I had the biggest walleye of my life wave bye-bye to me under the ice!! I had to have a serious moment of silence! LOL!! Check out the full story of the shoulda, coulda, Not going to happens in the Rainy Lake Forum!! Send some of our good old Wabasha Anglers onto the site!! That would be fun to talk fishing!! Better yet gas up, and lets get after them!! Hey hows your bowling game?? Let me know if ya need a few pointers. My first year at the new bowling center here I shot the 2nd 300 ever bowled in Ifalls. That was my 5th career 300, but only my first in league play as the 3 others were in tournaments and 1 in practice.

Good Fishing Brad!!

The fishing is really slow down here, but picking up a few Sauger(-)walleye's on lake pepin. I haven't been pan fishing for awhile now, but that fist ice fishing was great. We were up at URL Jan. 1 and are heading back there next Thursday. Then in March we are heading to Lake of the woods. I need more vacation time then I could come up and hook into one of those big hogs you guys were landing. I got a 29 incher last spring which was my biggest so far. My bowling game is up and down, but mostly down. Five 300's is pretty impressive. I had seven straight once this year and then threw the next one in the ditch. NICE!!! I will throw out a few posts about the fishing down here, but you might have to wait about a month for good reports.

A day off guiding today (SuperBowl) and I watched the show.... this show and the one several weeks ago with some remote Ice MegaCrappie were both just so close to being there.... top shelf really doesn't do them justice.

Between the unbelievable camera work that makes you feel like you right there watching and undoubtably some great editing your productions are beyond entertaining and educational they are art. And James is a natural... but I'm sure a lot of hard work makes it that way...

Sheeeebaa salutes to the show, to the guides, to the camera man, to the production staff, and to the pretty sheeebas and gents that showed their majestic features as they were lifted through the ice.

Why doesn't every hunt and fish show , have the how we got there section of the show... I think that is the part of this crews show that puts your mind in a "this is a real place mode.", or "I could be standing right there mode"

Well... thank you! I know Chris and I have one heck of a good time fishing together and I think that comes through in the footage. Plus we do land some darn nice fish too. We're planning another Rainy Walleye shoot this winter. This time we're going to be headed to the east end of Rainy where Chris has never stepped foot in the winter so that will definitely add a twist.
