I'm still in deer mode but once I get my buck I'll be ready to dig out the ice gear. I don't know anything about these splake. Are they available here in minnesota?

Always amazing videos! Getting the camera footage of the marcum was very cool!

When you ask the wife if you can go fish - doesn't it feel a lot like asking your mom if you can go play with your friends?

Yeah, they most certainly are. I'd list off the lakes but there's dozens of them. The MN DNR website has a list of all the "trout lakes" in MN. you can find that online at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/trout_lakes/list.html

Once you've found a lake that interests you use the Lake Finder function to research that individual lake. Doing that will allow you to get access to the stocking reports from recent years as well as the size structure for the lake which will help you know if you're on a numbers lake or a lake with trophy potential.

Outside of MN I believe the splake is distributed as far west as Colorado and all the states in around the Great Lakes have populations as well.

Two things I learned from this shoot... splake are super neat looking fish that fight like holy heck!

It is pretty rare to get a big fish coming in on a bait with the camera on the flasher while it all unfolds. Typically the camera is just a few seconds too late but this time it all worked out and Mark "Johnie on the Spot" Johnson gets a major thumbs up for his work behind the camera on that take.

As for the underwater footage... the lake we fished had some of the best water clarity I've ever seen. Some of the shots of the spoon jigging up and down were taken in 40+ foot of water. Having the MarCum 825c cameras in the water under the ice during the fight with water clarity that high made tussling with these fish all the more fun. Except for the times when the got off right under the ice and you got to watch them swim away nice and slow.

Not only was the underwater camera shots cool, but that is THEE best shot of ANY flasher showing a fish come to the lure!

I had the urge to set the hook for you!

We didn't have the opportunity to put any on the table but my understanding is the smaller splake are very good to eat as well. Grilled or broiled... yum-yum.

...Fantastic show James!!.. I took a trip up to Pasha in May when Chad made an offer for IDO members, it was a great trip. I'll admit that if I had a means to get up there in the winter to experience the ice fishing I'd do so in a heartbeat. I'll definitely have to make a trip up at some point do just that!..

For those of you that are giving this some thought.. go up and take advantage of some fantastic fishing... Chad is an exceptional young man and an impeccable host. I'm sure he'll put you on the fish..

Again James, great show..looking forward to many more!!.

I used to Ice Fish a ton and this trip to this "Secret Lake" Chad from Pasha Lake Cabins has up there was the best Ice Fishing Trip I have ever experienced. The Splake was an incredible fish and the fight in those things were unbelievable. I have never had a fish take drag, swimming backwards down the hole until I fished for Splake. If you go you better bring a reel with a tremendous drag in cold weather.

How come Cal didn’t “Do the Granrud” when requested????? :

Great video! I have fished for spake in my area several times but we generally get them much smaller due to lake size and food sources.

Very well done!!

Thanks Sparky. The splake is definitely one of my favorite fish to catch through the ice.

Thanks for the very informative show guys! I just watched it on TV this morning (DVR). Learned a TON about jigging for pike. You sure caught some impressive fish. I think my Dad would love a trip up there, I'll have to start saving my snow shoveling money

Glad you liked the show... that Pasha Lakes area is unbelievably beautiful and there's just no fishing pressure.

On another note... you might want to check out this thread. Some guys are looking for a lens cover for a marcum. Your timing could not be better.
