That video sure has me wishing it was ice season now!! James- I noticed the length on your quiverstik- is that like a 30" outside rod?! And it looks like you had a couple of them based on backing color on the fly reel? Are you trying to beat my collection?!?!

Looks like I might have to make a call to thorne in the morning for a couple more toys!!!

What a way to start out the morning.

Your homework worked out well Joel. A couple years ago I happened to find a lake in my back yard just like that as far as Bluegill quality.

James lets get the whole video up here.

I taped the show and watched it last night.
Good job and kudo's to both James & Joel for a very good show.

My wife Nancy say's that it is by far the best fishing show we watch. Quoted directly from her: It is very well put together and the most informative of all the fishing shows we watch.

Thanks James and Mark for doing such a good job with this. It was a fun bite to be a part of.

I've had a few questions and PM's this morning about exactly how we went about finding this lake, and because we’re so limited by the time constraints of TV I really didn’t get to share everything I wanted to share regarding the search tools. Here’s some tips on how to use Contour Pro and what to look for as you’re sifting through DNR survey info.

  • Lakemaster Contour Pro as Homebase - See the first picture included as this is the first step while lake-hunting. Simply clicking on lake by lake, studying location, size, and general proximity of that lake to other lakes, population centers, etc. At this point, the software is a visualization tool.

  • DNR Survey Information - Pictures #2 and #3 highlight using the Contour Pro to find the DNR survey and then view it.

  • What to Look For - Surveys with stunted populations in any species are most readily determined for me by looking at the "Length of Selected Species Sampled for All Gear for the Selected Year" portion of the DNR Survey (picture #3). Imagine looking at the results of that table graphically (picture #4). What you want to see is obviously a larger size distribution overall, with the bars in that imaginary graph being higher and further to the right!

  • Access - Poorer and less access equals better and more in terms of fish size and numbers. Popular lakes near population centers along well traveled highways more often than not makes a quality population difficult to exist. Pay careful attention to the location of the access and where you'd like to fish on the Contour Pro map. Further is better, especially if you have to go through several small inlets or other back bays to get to your target area. Generally speaking, the tougher it is to launch from, get to, or find, the more likely you are to find a winner.

  • Special Regulations and Stocking Information - Often, the DNR recognizes a lake's potential before the general public does, and they create special regulations on such lakes. This is also listed on the DNR report, as is stocking information.

  • Aerial Photography - The Contour Pro software also has a link to view aerial photography for the same extent/lake you were viewing on the software. Substrate, location, and proximity to other features is something that really sticks out to most people on lakes with high water clarity when viewing the air photos. Get good at interpreting this and you've found yet another valuable tool to add to the arsenal.

There's plenty of information there, I'm sure you'll find more and better useful ways in solving the puzzle!

Joel

Good eye on noticing the two separate rods. I bought two Thorne Brothers rods like this last year. One is 28” and has the regular cork handle that can be used with a fly reel OR spinning reel. The other is a 36” with the recessed cork handle designed specifically for use with the fly reels. Personally I prefer the 36” Quiverstick as it best fits the way I fish. I like to be out on the ice roaming around moving from hole to hole and the added length keeps me in a more upright and comfortable position versus stooped over the hole.

Here’s a pic of those two handle styles side by side. Excuse the crummy photos. I’m shooting these with my phone. Notice the recessed handle on the top rod which is the 36” version.

The two handle styles dictate which reel style can be used. The recessed handle is fly reel only. The traditional round handle works with both reel styles but does change hand position.

Here’s how most people hold the rod with the normal cork handle when mounted with a spinning or fly reel. I guess you could call this “pistol grip."

Great shoot guys, a ton of good info too. Nice work

The recessed handle on the 36” rod mounted with a fly reel lends itself to a “hand over top” position. I have big hands and this allows a very comfortable fishing position. I can use my finger tips to lend braking power to the drag if a big fish makes a run and my extended pointer finger touches the blank which adds to the sensitivity and control. Between the two rods I use the 36” most of the time. Likely 80/20 split with the 28” rod spending far too much time in the Otter rod case than it likely deserves.

As for the reels, I’m using the Cortland ProCast #3/4. They virtually eliminate line twist and the drags are smooth as butter. Any time I’m fishing panfish in less than 15’ - 20' of water I’m fishing a Quiverstick with the fly reel.

That's punishing watching you guys ice fish when it's 65 degrees here today

Excellent show James and Joel

And that had to be Mark behind the Camera

I aim to please, But don't shoot very well.

James HolstAdministrator
Mark is the man behind the camera. You think it is tough to watch guys catch fish on TV you should try being there in person and having to watch it from 5 feet away. That’s why I always make sure Mark gets plenty of fishing time on these trips. I wouldn’t want him to go nuts watching us have all the fun.

Hey Chuck

Yup, it was a fantastic day to be out crawling the ice. As for more new shows, we’re in Hayward WI fishing crappies with Tanner Wildes this coming sunday.
